The release of DJ Quik's debut album, Quik Is the Name, in 1991 begged the question: does rap really need yet another gangsta rapper? Indeed, by that time, rap had become saturated with numerous soundalike gangsta rappers -- most of whom weren't even a fraction as interesting as such pioneers of the style as Ice-T, N.W.A, and Schoolly D. Nonetheless, rapper/producer Quik turned out to be more noteworthy than most of the gangsta rappers who debuted that year. Lyrically, the former gang member (who grew up in the same L.A. ghetto as N.W.A, Compton) doesn't provide any major insights. His sex/malt liquor/gang-banging imagery was hardly groundbreaking in 1991. But his hooks, beats, and grooves (many of which owe a debt to '70s soul and funk) are likeable enough. ~ Alex Henderson

FUNKY CLASSIC DJ Quik hits the mainstream with a bang in "Quik Is The Name." Here, he starts his trademark old school P-Funk vibe that would be prevalent in most of his future work. Sure, Dre deserves a lot of the credit for starting the G-Funk craze of the 90's, but Quik deserves at least as much of the credit too!! His beats are nothing short of phenomenal. The beat on "Tonite" is ahead of its time; it sounds like it could have came out in '95 or '96. He keeps it old school on tracks like "8 Ball" and "Quik Is The Name." His rhyming is good and his style is entertaining. The songs are funky, laced with the twist of the turntable. He isn't too hard core, but he still has a street credibility. Cop it!!!!

Quik Is The Name album
$6.79 BALANCE & OPTIONS displays DJ Quik at the top of his musical game. Taking a drastic stylistic turn from his previous projects, the new album showcases a growing musical maturity in its warm, soulful, funk-influenced grooves.
The set takes its musical cues from black music's past, running counter to the synthetic productions of much of current hip-hop. From the opening track "Change the Game", with its warm, soul-inflected keyboards, to the Roger Troutman vocoder refrain on "Did Y'all Feel Dat," the mood is clearly rooted in '70s funk. One of the album's highlights is the escapist party anthem "Pitch In on a Party," which evokes the champagne and cocaine decadence of the late '70s disco era. Its subtle grooves and tinkling percussion mimic the toasting of wineglasses, while a wah-wah guitar chugs along the background.

Quik Is The Name CD music
$6.85 Don't be confused by the name; DJ Quik isn't offering up a paint-by-numbers in-the-mix recording, or any fancy turntable manipulation. Instead, this multi-talented artist is busy defining a new genre for himself on RHYTHM-AL-ISM. A vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, DJ Quik's abilities and musical interests are too wide-ranging to be contained by any one style. ...

Quik Is The Name music CDs
$7.59 All songs written or co-written by Dante Blake. Samples include "Conscience" (as performed by Sun), "Rigor Mortis" (as performed by Cameo), "The Incredible Folk" (as performed by Blowfly) and "Shack Up" (as performed by Banbara).
There's an added bonus to rap music when it's a DJ who steps to the foreground to represent, both on the mic and behind the boards. Three albums deep, DJ Quik still believes in "makin' endz," this time with SAFE + SOUND. While the West Coast dives deeper and deeper into the ocean of violent gangsta rap, Quik remains true to his past beliefs: money, women and, of course, the funk.
No, not the G-funk, but the P-funk, as the DJ proclaims in his intro, "Street Level Entrance," which accurately blends into a Quik-tempo bass line complemented by some really Quik scratches for "Get At Me." Musically, the Compton-born rapper's sound is unique and better associated with artists like Erick Sermon (the East Coast's Funk Lord) than CMW (Compton's Most Wanted). "Somethin' 4 Tha Mood" keeps the setting calm, letting Quik's laid back vocals easily ride over the smooth ...

Quik Is The Name songs
$10.59 As one of the MCs in the classic crew NWA, Ice Cube made a name for himself at an early age, helping to pioneer West Coast hip-hop. Ironically though, Cube's debut solo album, AMERIKKKA'S MOST WANTED, is deep-rooted in fast-paced tracks that are reminiscent of the East Coast sound that help define Public Enemy. In fact, it was the Bomb Squad who produced most of the album. Tracks like "The Nigga ya Love to Hate" and "Turn Off the Radio" are high-energy gems that show the fiery delivery that helped make Cube one of the industry's true stars. Recommended tracks include "Once Upon ...
