Some jazz critics may point to Classics in the Key of G as proof of Kenny G's lack of jazz substance, but it really is proof of how well he makes instrumental pop albums. Yes, Kenny G has reworked a predictable set of pop classics, from "Summertime" to "The Look of Love," to fit his signature smooth sound, but that should be expected from an album like this. ||A comforting, if not whimsical, visit to the songs we never|
With the likes of George Benson, David Foster, and Bebel Gilberto, in accompaniment, and with the digital overlaying of Louis Armstrong; make no mistake, this album while featuring Kenny G, is about the music. Unlike so much of today’s categorical “contemporary jazz” or “smooth jazz” this is about songs anyone over 40 can relate to. These are the songs that stir memories and make you sing along when you’re driving the car. I was never a Kenny G fan, but I that’s been changed by this album. His cover of “Desafinado” doesn’t yield to the classic great performances of Stan Getz one iota, while the “Girl from Ipanema” with Bebel Gilberto has an irreverent edge to his tenor tone that is atypical of Kenny G, and contrasts against the near-velvet voice of Ms. Gilberto. For a man who has changed the contemporary instrumental world with the soprano saxophone, I personally like his tenor sound better, and it’s a big beautiful tone not heard that much in today’s music. The “Wonderful World” cut with Louis Armstrong has been both praised and maligned by the jazz world, and for those who would take umbrage… shame on you. Louis Armstrong’s original was and is still wonderful, musically I think this one’s nicely done and entertaining… just like Louis would have liked it… pure entertainment. Wonderfully done. This one’s for the listeners, whether they play themselves or not. All the stars.
