Gov't Mule's self-titled debut is a scorching set of heavy blues-rockers. Although they have some difficulty coming up with memorable original material, the band is loose, funky, gritty, and real. They have enough burning licks to make the record a worthwhile listen for guitar fanatics. ~ David Jehnzen

Gov't Mule album
$9.69 Gov't Mule's sound is a throwback to the '70s heyday of Southern rock, and their style is peppered with references to the best of the Allmans, with a liberal dose of early ZZ Top thrown in for good measure. Their second album shows no signs of a sophomore slump, featuring playing and songwriting every bit as strong as their debut ...
| | Gov't Mule Life Before Insanity CD (2000) (Import) Germany
Gov't Mule CD music
$9.75 In 1997, following a short period of splitting time between the Allman Brothers Band and Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes left the former to concentrate full-time on the latter. With Haynes' rededication to the band, Mule went on to resurrect and expand upon the power-trio concept first pioneered by Cream and Mountain. Much like its predecessors, the Mule's fifth album, LIFE BEFORE INSANITY, continues to be yoked to leader Haynes' gruff vocals and formidable guitar playing.
This time around, the Mule wanders away from its blues-rock roots, embracing a creative expansion marked by odd time signatures and more of a low-key delivery. Haynes' soulful vocals are an especially appropriate match for the haunting "Tastes Like Wine" and the goosebump-inducing title track. Elsewhere, the Mule welcomes such guests as Ben Harper on the meandering "Lay Your Burden Down" and harmonica player Hook Herrera on the gnarly "I Think You Know What I Mean." Although most of LIFE is low-key, Haynes gets to flash his chops on a slide-drenched, rip-roaring cover of Robert Johnson's "If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day," a hidden track.
Recorded at Muscle Shoals Studios, Sheffield, Alabama; Water Music, Hoboken, New Jersey; Bearsville Studios, Woodstock, New York.
Personnel: Warren Haynes (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, slide guitar); Ben Harper (vocals, lap steel guitar); Allen Woody (mandolin, ...

$16.69 Return To Summer Lake is Steven's third recording. Special guest artists on the CD include Molly O'Brien, Nina Gerber, Debi Smith, SONiA of Disappear Fear, Pete & Maura Kennedy, Al Petteway & Bruce Molsky. Steven Bio:Billboard Magazine describes Steven Gellman's music as "intensely sensitive and impressively intelligent at the same time". As another reviewer aptly phrased it, Gellman's songs are "Kodak moments" from his life.He often performs in nursing homes and retirement communities, and even used a choir of senior citizens as backup on the track "Almeda at 90" from his album "Photobook". Dick Cerri, President of the World Folk Music Association says "Steve's natural ability on stage enables an audience to not only enjoy the songs and stories, but to participate in the performance."Nowhere is there a better example of how Gellman touches people's lives than the story of fan Jennifer Baker, blind and wheelchair bound from a lifelong struggle with kidney failure. She first heard Steven at a Borders Book store concert and instantly became one of his most ardent fans. His music was an inspiration to her in her last months and Gellman performed at a memorial service in her honor to benefit the National Kidney Association. The song "A Little Bit Fine" on Steven's CD "Return to Summer Lake" was written for Jennifer and is one of his most requested songs. His new release, "Love Loss Longing", is Steven's first concept album. The eleven-song collection describes the journey one goes through at the end of a relationship. As Steven puts it, "To me, each ...

Gov't Mule songs
$7.99 DEJA VOODOO serves as a comeback for Gov't Mule, who lost founding member Allen Woody in August 2000. Bandmates Warren Haynes and Matt Abts carried on with a search to fill Woody's shoes, and this led to live recordings featuring guest bassists on each cut. This studio outing welcomes the arrival of former Black Crowes bass player Andy Hess and keyboardist Danny Louis, whose entry transforms the Mule into a quartet, upping the creative potential for all involved.
Being the consummate musician that he is, Haynes guides this potent ensemble down a wide-ranging path. Wielding his ever-present slide, the in-demand guitarist pours plenty of soulful playing into the country-tinged mellowness of "Wine and Blood," switching gears to plug a wah-wah pedal in for the muscular strut "Perfect Shelter." Louis's organ provides a neat foil for Haynes, be it the New Orleans-like funk fills that pepper "Bad Man Walking" or the subtle support provided on the soaring "Little Toy Brain." Hess also gets his licks in, holding the ...
| | Gov't Mule Deep End 1 CD (2001)
Gov't Mule album
$7.99 Initial pressings of THE DEEP END, VOL. 1 included a bonus Enhanced CD.
Additional personnel includes: Jack Bruce, Flea, Bootsy Collins, John Entwistle, Larry Graham, Gregg Allman, Chuck Leavell, Little Milton, John Scofield, Bernie Worrell.
"Sco-Mule" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
When Gov't Mule bassist Allen Woody died of undetermined causes in August 2000, friends and fellow founding members Warren Haynes and Matt Abts were unsure whether to proceed with the Mule or not. Determined to honor their late friend's memory, the duo came up with the idea of having their favorite bass players step in for a song or two. An astounding range of bassists answered the call and the result is the far-flung 2-CD set THE DEEP END, VOL.1.
Jack Bruce appears on the Cream-like dirge "Fool's Moon," while funkateers Flea and Larry Graham respectively slap and pop on "Down And Out In New York City" and the Band Of Gypsys-flavored "Life On The Outside". Other memorable moments include the shimmering contributions made by Mike Watt and Jerry Cantrell on CCR's "Effigy," the gorgeous duet with R&B legend Little Milton on the uplifting "Soulshine," and the jazzy instrumental tango Haynes has with John Scofield on "Sco-Mule." The late Woody himself is represented ...

| | Roy Buchanan Live In Japan CD (2003) (Import) Germany
Gov't Mule album
$18.39 LIVE IN JAPAN was recorded during the British blues guitarist's 1977 Japanese tour, and includes both Roy Buchanan originals and covers ranging from Larry Williams' "Slow Down" to Don Gibson's "Sweet Dreams."
Live in Japan (2003) is said to have been Roy Buchanan's favorite of all his platters, and ironically, it was never issued stateside. However, as word spread, the title became an essential addition to his discography. Fact is that it may have never come out at all, had there not been a loophole in Buchanan's contract with former label Polydor, giving them control over his non-North American output. Joining the guitarist for his 1977 tour of Japan are John Harrison (bass), Malcolm Lukens (keyboards), and Byrd Foster (drums/vocals). They are likewise the core contributors to Buchanan's most recent studio effort, A Street Called Straight (1976), though no tracks from the album are represented here. Instead, the set consists of recent collaborations, definitive cover versions, and a few seminal Buchananclassics. The immaculate fidelity immediately separates Live in Japan from most other releases in his canon. The enthusiastic yet typically reserved Japanese audience is first treated to a laid-back and stretched-out reading of Booker T. & the MG's' "Soul Dressing." The backing trio provide a rock-solid bed for Buchanan's sinuous interjections and spacious melody lines. "Sweet Honey Dew" is a perfect vehicle for some incendiary string shredding, although the actual tune is somewhat of a derivation of a standard blues riff. Perhaps more fitting is the rousing rendition of Larry Williams' "Slow Down," uncovering the nimble accuracy accompanying the sonic kick in Buchanan's piercing fret work. Contrasting this is the lengthy jam on "Blues Otani," ...

Gov't Mule CD music
$12.65 What's in a name?If you are going to focus on something, why not their unrelenting, heavy riffs, or their in-your-face live performances, their DIY record sales in the thousands, hell, even the symbolic work clothes the band wear onstage... "Truth is, if you don't like our name, you're probably not going to like our music. What matters is that our fans do." declares front man Nick D, when asked about changing their name.Drawing on it's members' metal, hardcore and rock influences to form a heavy, melodic riff-laden sound, Cyphilis has been impressing it's own brand of metal on their fans since 2001. Cyphilis' sonic style is unique, but to attempt describing it within the realm of known entities - the band combines elements of Pantera, Clutch and Prong with a touch of Hatebreed and System Of A Down. "Our songs are usually pretty straightforward" says Germ, who writes the music, "We aren't distracted by showing off. We strive to be deliberate, tightly wound, oddly melodic and heavy as hell". Thousands of fans in and around the band's Wilkes-Barre, PA hometown, and thousands more throughout the world, have connected with the band's loud, aggressive style, thanks to the internet and impressive live performances. "Our live act is like a kick right in the face. Period" Nick D suggests as an explanation of their fans' loyalty at pit after pit filled show. "Our live show is to the point." adds Deuce. A Cyphilis performance is indeed tight, powerful and purposeful - and their fans do respond. The demonic vocals of Nick D combined with Germ's steely riffs, and the full, driving rhythms laid out by Deuce and Feist are an impressive combination sure to incite any disciple of heavy metal, though it is not recommended for the faint of heart, or the average Hootie and the Blowfish fan.Word of the band's impressive performance has spread and the band has enjoyed opening slots for such legends as Kiss, Slayer and Judas Priest. The band has also has performed locally and abroad with their friends, and Hollywood Records'Breaking Benjamin, who has recently achieved platinum sales.Sales of Cyphilis' first EP Backwords (2003) and their full length Buff Shined Scars (2004), both self-produced and released, have reached nearly five thousand, and both releases spent weeks in the top ten local album chart. The band's blistering yet melodic songs have garnered impressive local radio airplay on WBSX 97.9X ("THE X") as well as national regular spins on XM ...
