Like many rappers and singers before him, Link realizes that songs about sex sell -- and, like Luther Campbell and R. Kelly, he knows that explicitness is bankable in the '90s. Taking his cue from those two trailblazers, Link pushes carnality to the forefront on his debut disc, Sex Down. There's no denying that Link has skills; positioning himself somewhere between hip-hop and smooth urban soul, he cleverly sells his tales of flesh by cloaking them with radio-ready hooks. Sex Down is pure ear candy -- beneath those slick surfaces, there's not much there (apart from some dirty talk). Link only occasionally reaches the songwriting heights of his first single "Whatcha Gone Do" or "My Body," the hit he co-wrote for LSG; when he has mediocre material, he makes it go down easy by creating alluring productions and slamming beats. So, Sex Down is frustrating -- on one hand it shows considerable promise, on the other it shows that he relies on clichés and sex talk to cover up for his occasional lack of direction. There's certainly enough good stuff to make it worth a listen, but only a handful of cuts truly deliver on Link's promise. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Sex Down is pure ear candy. Link occasionally reaches the songwriting heights of his first single "Whatcha Gone Do" or "My Body," the hit he co-wrote for LSG; when he has more middle of the road material, he makes it go down easy by creating alluring productions and slamming beats. Fusing hip-hop and soul, Link brings equal amounts of both to the street game. Those on top of their own game know that Link co-wrote the number one R&B hit "My Body" for LSG (Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill). Now poised for solo commercial success, Link delivers SEX DOWN, his debut release. Written by Link, Antoinette Roberson and producer/writer Darrell "Delite" Allamby, some of the tracks have a deep underground hip-hop texture, some are rooted in soul, while still others bring that jeep-trunk funk. "Whatcha Gone Do" hit big at urban radio, while "I Really Wanna Sex Your Body" has a sweet-soul vibe. Be sure not to miss the Gospel-tinged "Runaway." Link's lyrics are fundamentally about relationships, and SEX DOWN runs the gamut of emotions; from joy to sadness.

Entertainment Weekly (7/24/98, p.74) - "Booty calls need background music and this new R&B sweet-back wants to provide it....Link's vocals gifts and efficacy as a songwriter...help." - Rating: B
Vibe (9/98, p.299) - "...a playful, truly adult album that will satisfy the freak in you."

5 stars Hit (From the Beginning to the End)
It's not often that you buy a cd and the whole cd is a hit all the way through. This was one of the best cd's during it's time. I wonder why he had not come out with another cd since then. Link,"What have you been up to?"

Big Apple Rappin': The Early Days Of Hip-Hop Culture In New York City 1979-82 CDs  (2006) (Import) United Kingdom

CD $27.59
With a line-up that could only be improved through complimentary boom-box, skipping rope and square of lino, Big Apple Rappin - The Early Days Of Hip-Hop Culture In New York City 1979-1982 is a fantastic double-disc retrospective of the then emergent hip-hop genre, featuring prime cuts from the likes of Spoonie Gee, Spyder D, Nice and Nasty 3, Super 3, T Ski Valley and Cold Crush Brothers and more. Soul Jazz. 2006. Photographers: Johan Kugelberg; Joe Conzo.
Covering the first few years of recorded hip-hop, BIG APPLE RAPPIN' is not mapped out in a way to stake claim as a definitive compilation. It contains a handful of well-known old-school singles, such as Spoonie Gee's "Spoonin' Rap" and Cold Crush Brothers' "Weekend," but all told, it'll appeal most to hip-hop fans who have only the basics. For hip-hop neophytes and younger listeners who were born too late, it might be like jumping into an advanced class, but the whole thing is too fun to make you feel lost. The younger listeners--especially those who have heard all sorts of purist accusations leveled at Puff Daddy and his descendants for the lifting of entire songs for new hits--might be surprised by what they hear. Compared to modern hip-hop, the songs might sound archaic and practically novelty-like, and that's because they are precisely that. With rare exception, this set is made of basic and one-dimensional rhymes over replayed disco hits (including Cheryl Lynn's "Got to Be Real," Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat," and Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough"); Masterdon Committee's "Funkbox Party," in fact, is the only selection that makes use of a drum machine. However, the infectious exuberance on display through the whole thing, along with the knowledge of how this culture would continue to develop, more than makes up for whatever misgivings you might have toward the simplicity of it all. Amidst the MCs' talk of their own greatness, how they'll make you want to get down, and their many nicknames and why they deserve them, it would be easy to lose sight of Brother D and Collective Efforts' "How We Gonna Make the Black Nation Rise?," one of the first tracks to accept the torch from the Last Poets and Watts Prophets: "Blessed are we who dare to be free, we gotta change the way we behave/You gotta sacrifice for a righteous cause, or ...

Supremes This Is The Story: 70'S Albums Vol. 1: The Jean Terrell CDs  (2006)

Sex Down
CD $61.45  4.4 stars
The 68 selections on this triple-disc title represent the most comprehensive overview ever to be assembled of the Supremes' early-'70s back catalog. In addition to the studio albums Right On (1970), New Ways But Love Stays (1970), Touch (1971), Supremes Arranged and Produced by Jimmy Webb (1972), and Floy Joy (1973), there are plenty of rarities too. Primarily, a baker's dozen taken from the shelved Promises Kept project circa 1971/1972 and a few one-off songs that appeared on vintage vinyl anthologies. This Is the Story: The '70s Albums, Vol. 1 1970-1973: The Jean Terrell Years (2007) begins once Diana Ross had left the group to pursue a solo career. Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong resumed their international success with Jean ...
