Despite their crucial involvement in the development of thrash metal, by 1987 San Francisco's Exodus were playing a desperate game of catch-up. Upstarts Metallica had first stolen their thunder, then their guitarist; and after a yearlong delay that rendered their seminal debut, Bonded by Blood, rather archaic, the group experienced a tumultuous lineup change with the departure of founding vocalist Paul Baloff and the arrival of ex-Testament singer Steve Souza. By and large, the throat-shredding vocal styles of both frontmen were pretty much interchangeable, but the difference in songwriting quality between the aforementioned Bonded by Blood and its dismal successor, Pleasures of the Flesh, was quite astounding. Truth is, except for the rather memorable title track, the record simply fails to deliver the goods, seeming almost like an evolutionary step backward. Opener "Deranged" started an irritating tradition of inane spoken word intros, and most of the album's tracks amount to little more than a collection of frenetic riffs bundled together in haphazard fashion. "30 Seconds" is -- you guessed it -- a pointless 30-second burst of classical guitar that has no place on this or any other album, and it's downhill from there. A very disappointing release, Pleasures of the Flesh left little hope for the future, but incredibly, Exodus would rebound with excellent results on 1989's Fabulous Disaster. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Combat should be ashamed to call this a "remaster" repackaged, yes reissued-yes but remastered....it sounds terrible. I'd go as far as to say it actually sounds worse than the original mastered version.

A reasonable follow-up to Bonded By Blood Since Exodus' first release Bonded By Blood was delayed due to problems of the Record Label kind, this album seemed to follow up about a year after their first album release. In actuality,
several years filled the gap between the two with many significant changes. First and formost of which, notorious lead singer Paul Baloff being removed from the band and being replaced by Legacy frontman Steve Souza. While the vocal style is similar to Baloff's (the same growling banshee screech), it just doesn't seem to have that same Baloff intensity that made Bonded By Blood such a classic. Production-wise it's decent, and most tracks still have some pretty heavy thrash-style riffs, but what really carries this album are the three tracks carried over from the Exodus demo when Baloff was still in the band. The song titled "Pleasures of the flesh", "Brain dead", and "Seeds of hate". If there's any reason to get this album, it's for these three classic songs more than anything. Awesome thrash Some of the best thrash you'll ever hear. Highlights include "Brain Dead", "Deranged", "Choose Your Weapon", and the title track. Submitted by Colin (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The sophomore jinx gets another one When compared to its predecessor BBB or its successor Fabulous Disaster, POTF just doesn't measure up. Exodus are kind of getting used to Steve Souza, who's voice is better than Paul's, but Steve doesn't sing with Paul's attitude yet. Also, the songwriting suffers, with a couple of the songs sounding like a bunch of riffs slapped carelessly together, in addition to the fact that many riffs are generic. And while 30 Seconds is nice, it's very out of place here and seems stupid. However, there are a few bright spots, like Gary and Rick's best soloing, the tracks Deranged, the title track, and Seeds of Hate, the good sound on this remaster, and the fact that the album does provide good thrashing. THRASH!!!!!!!! Quite a thrashy cd. It took me a while to find it on cd and I am very happy with it. Just as good as Fabulos Disaster if not better. Althought I must say the sound on Fabulos is somewhat better and so is the production. Submitted by N/A (Waukesha, WI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Pleasures Of The Flesh album
$7.99 After years struggling for recognition while watching their peers achieve fame and fortune, Bay Area mainstays Exodus had every reason to be dejected when they re-grouped in 1989 to record their third album Fabulous Disaster. Still, they went on to create their most diverse and carefully conceived effort yet, while remaining faithful to their no-frills thrash ethic. But while the album represented the realization of their vision, as well as their commercial peak, it still failed to gain them their well-deserved place alongside such thrash metal giants as Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer. After a random spoken word intro, opener "The Last Act of Defiance" quickly sets the frenzied pace, taken a step further by the title track's highly amusing apocalyptic vision. Both songs also showcase the amazingly fast feet and incomparable fills ...
| | Exodus Bonded By Blood CD (1985)
Pleasures Of The Flesh CD music
$7.85 Had it been released immediately after it was recorded in 1984, Exodus' Bonded by Blood might be regarded today alongside Metallica's Kill 'em All as one of the landmark albums responsible for launching the thrash metal wave. But by the time it finally hit the streets more than a year later due to numerous record company-related difficulties, the genre the band helped spawn had evolved at an alarming rate (again, largely thanks to the unstoppable Metallica) and Exodus were left to wonder what kind of impact they may have had without these setbacks. Opening with the mind-blowing power of title track, the band immediately pummels through a number of astounding thrashers, including "And Then There Were None" and, perhaps their best well-known track, "A Lesson in Violence" -- a veritable handbook for thrash etiquette. Though less enduring, "Metal Command" is one of the band's most fully realized compositions and leads the way into concert the fave "Piranha," which may sound a tad dated, or charmingly ...

Sara K. tells her musical war-stories with heart-cutting lyrics and tunes that you'll be singing long after the disc has stopped playing. Pleasures Of The Flesh songs
$13.95 Best known for her years as lead vocalist for Warlock, Doro Pesch left that West German gothic metal outfit in the late '80s to pursue a solo career. While Warlock (a band lyrically along the lines of Iron Maiden, Grim Reaper, and Helloween) embraced fantasy-oriented gothic themes, Doro's solo albums took a slicker, more commercial arena rock approach and pretty much avoided references to witches, demons, or evil spirits. Doro, the rough-voiced singer's second solo project, isn't in ...
