Never ones to think twice about flirting with supernatural evil forces, San Francisco's Possessed scheduled their second album, Beyond the Gates, to be released on Halloween, 1986! Maybe they should have been a little more wary, as the recording that should have built upon the solid foundation laid down by the previous year's genre-forming debut Seven Churches (still regarded as one of death metal's inaugural cornerstones), wound up coming as a disappointment to most critic and fans alike. Verily, in most every observer's eyes, Beyond the Gates represented an almost indefensible step backwards; transforming a sound previously distinguished for its inexorable power into a ragged, decidedly weaker-kneed replacement. Perhaps the record's feeble production was to blame, although it's hard to lay the blame entirely on experienced producer Carl Canedy in light of his previous triumphs with Anthrax and Overkill. More likely, it was a combination of difficulties: poor funding, rushed recording conditions, questions over musical direction, and simple lack of preparedness (all common problems for starving, under-pressure-to-deliver extreme metal bands) that doused the flames in disappointing efforts like "Tribulation," the title track, and the simply god-awful "The Beasts of the Apocalypse." Occasional bright spots do surface with the focused and forceful "March to Die," the refreshingly elaborate "No Will to Life," and even opener "The Heretic," thanks to its nifty, scary intro. But, taken as a whole, there was no denying that Beyond the Gates packed nowhere near the consistency, inventiveness and, most importantly, eventual influence of its predecessor, signaling the beginning of Possessed's inevitable decline. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Possessed Beyond The Gates Songs Beyond The Gates Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) No rating for this? This album is a continuation of their fantastic debut, Seven Churches. This one does not disappoint. Standout tracks include Tribulation, Phantasm and my favorite on the album... No Will to Live (what Kashmir is to Led Zeppelin; No will to Live might be to Possessed...). Seriously, this is a very good album although I recommend this only after you have checked out their debut album. Submitted by drudow (Lawrenceville, GA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good album but the sound This album is wonderfull , all the tracks are good but this album could be better if the sound quality was better . If this album has a better sound quality it was probably my #1. This is the reason of my 4 stars Submitted by lill_benzo502 (La Malbaie, Qc, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Gatefold One of the saddest things about this album on cd? The fact that it's a cd and doesnt have the cool gatefold that the album came with originally!
A must! Submitted by dmnovaes (West Sacramento, Ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Sophomore album by legendary band!! Beyond the gates is an album that has slowed down when compared to seven churches, but still maintains that ferocity and catchy riffs. The album could have been produced better. The album still contains the satanic lyrics and familiar vocals. It starts off with a very excellent intro. It then leads to the standout track "the heretic." Other good songs off this album are "march to die," "no will to live," and restless dead." Although its no seven churches, this album is a must for any fans of thrash. Submitted by a reviewer (san fernando,ca,usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great album but won't match debut This is an awesome album in my opinon!
Possessed has gone more technical with this album and they have a sortof muddy sound which I heard was due to sloppy production but, the album is none the less a good one. Also I really love the album for the artwork done none other then the legendary Thomas Repka!!! Submitted by Alex (Cleveland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Possessed Seven Churches CD (1985) Remastered
Beyond The Gates CD music
$10.69 Often cited as the first true death metal record ever released (Florida's Death had been around just as long but would only make their vinyl debut a few years later), Possessed's Seven Churches took thrash metal's intensity to new levels of brutality. With song titles like "Burning in Hell," "Satan's Curse," and "The Exorcist" (featuring the famous movie's eerie title theme for an intro), the band definitely displayed a strong Slayer influence; but it was Possessed growler Jeff Becerra who first introduced the barely decipherable grunting vocal style which would epitomize the death metal ...

Beyond The Gates CD music
$10.45 Metal band Kreator had been around for awhile before they released Pleasure to Kill in 1986. Many in the underground metal scene were already paying special attention to the German outfit's proto-death sound, but the cult status was shed after this critically and commercially successful sophomore effort hit record-store shelves. As fierce and unyielding as the group's debut, Endless Pain, was, Pleasure ...
| | Terry Bozzio Nine Short Films CD (2002)
Beyond The Gates music CDs
$13.45 The two musicians featured on this album, Terry Bozzio and Billy Sheehan, have been featured on over 100 albums. That is a pretty remarkable accomplishment, and one that would lead to high expectations for the quality of the disc. Well, Bozzio and Sheehan sure know how to deliver, and not in a generic and expected way either. They have produced an album that really does come quite close to defying definition. The title is perhaps quite appropriate, as much of the music seems to have a cinematic texture, telling a story in much the same way as a film would. The title loses a little of its relevance in that there are ten, not nine tracks here, but listeners can give them that one. Truth be told, this fine album seems to cover a lot of varied styles and textures, entertaining the whole way through. The sounds on the album seem to vary from Zappa-ish to Crimson-esque to Peter ...
| | Stormlord Gorgon Cult CD (2005)
Beyond The Gates songs
$16.29 Italian symphonic black metal experts Stormlord return with the most critical record of their career. Featuring guest appearance by Guisseppe Orland of Novembre as well as lush female vocals. Also includes a cover version of Iron Maiden's classic 'Moonchild'. Scarlet. 2004.
Although they hail from a country -- Italy -- that's not exactly famous for birthing top-notch black metal bands, Rome's Stormlord's third full-length album, 2004's Gorgon Cult, does a more than passable job at competing with the acknowledged Scandinavian masters of the genre. Not that the dour, black-draped sextet is reinventing the wheel, mind you, but rather taking a well balanced blueprint for symphonic black metal (made popular by Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar, et al), and running with it like few Italian bands have before them: confidently and convincingly. In fact, standout tracks like "Dance of Hecate," ...
