| | Louder Than Ever Vol. 1 CD
Louder Than Ever, Vol. 1 is a sampler of the Loud hip-hop label and several affiliates, most prominently Relativity; issued in early 2000, it features cuts from those labels' more recent releases around that time, plus a smattering of rarities. Since it's mostly a promotional tool designed to make consumers curious about hearing more, it doesn't quite capture any particular moment in hip-hop, but it is a fairly consistent sampler, all told. Artists present include the Beatnuts, Raekwon, Xzibit, Big Punisher, Inspectah Deck, Krayzie Bone, and Mobb Deep with Lil' Kim. ~ Steve Huey

Personnel: Bernard Grubman (guitar).
Audio Mixers: Chris Conway; Daniel Romero; Troy Hightower; Tony Black.

| | Very Best Of Oleta Adams CD (1998)
Louder Than Ever Vol. 1 songs
$12.15 The Very Best of Oleta Adams primarily consists of material from her first three albums. The big mystery of this 1998 collection is the lack of material from 1990's Circle of One, by far her strongest and more musically varied set of songs. A mere three tunes are included here: "Get Here," the Soul II Soul-styled "Rhythm of Life," and the rousing "Circle of One." Her weaker second album, Evolution, however, is represented by no less than five tracks, and four songs from Moving On also appear. The Very Best of Oleta Adams also includes material that was never previously available on an Oleta Adams album. Tears for Fears' Seeds of Love hit "Woman in Chains" is here, and Adams' pitch-perfect vocal harmonies play off Roland Orzabal's melodramatic bombast surprisingly well. Though a more subtle arrangement may have been more successful, her rendition of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" (which appeared on the Elton John/Bernie Taupin covers album Two Rooms in 1991) is performed with such gusto Elton John's version pales by comparison. Adams also shows off her astonishing range on the Gershwin classic "Embraceable You" and a nice reading of Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross." Although The Very Best of Oleta Adams lacks two of her best performances -- Circle of One's gorgeous version of "Everything Must Change" (which has been recorded by countless artists, including ...
| | War Grooves & Messages CDs (1999)
Louder Than Ever Vol. 1 album
$11.05 (programming); The Waters, Debbie Moman, Milton "James" Myrick (background
Originally released on the MGM, United Artists, Avenue and MCA labels between 1970-1994. Includes liner notes by Bruce Garfield.
Digitally remastered by Dave Collins (A&M Mastering, Los Angeles, California)
& Rick Essig (Frankford Wayne Mastering Labs, New York, New York).
Grooves & Messages is another compilation from Rhino that recycles War's greatest hits and, like the previous collections, it contains most of the hits, but not all of them. The difference is, it actually has all the Top 10 pop hits and the majority of the Top 10 R&B hits (only "LA Sunshine" is missing), and it's sequenced in chronological order -- two important elements that were absent on The Best of War and its sequel, The Best of War & More, Vol. 2. Sounds perfect, doesn't it? The problem is, Grooves & Messages contains a bonus disc of remixes. There are a couple of big-name mixers here, including Armand Van Helden and Ganja Kru, but none of the mixes are of any interest. Furthermore, the casual fans that will want the first disc will have little use for the second. Still, that first disc is the best, most concise ...

| | Blackalicious Blazing Arrow CD (2002)
Louder Than Ever Vol. 1 music CDs
$11.49 For progressive hip-hop acts, aesthetic and commercial success seem to rarely walk hand in hand. Blackalicious proves to be an exception to that rule with BLAZING ARROW. Pessimists might suggest that the album's chart placing is due to the impressive array of guest stars, from old-school rap poet Gil Scott-Heron to R&B siren Jaguar Wright and rock-pop fave Ben Harper. While these guests do give an indication of the breadth of influences and styles present here, they are only the tip of the iceberg.
"I'll build my heaven on what is here" Blackalicious offers on "Nowhere Fast," giving both an example of their positive lyrical outlook and indication of the sonic riches so abundant on BLAZING ARROW. An impressive array of sophisticated sonic collage elements, hard-grooving funk rhythms, strings, and free-flowing, intelligent raps are at the heart of this complex-yet-organic recording. ...
| | Jack Williams Dreams Of The Song Dog CD (1996)
Louder Than Ever Vol. 1 songs
$11.45 Jack Williams' Dreams Of The Song Dog is a touching, subdued collection of confessional songs, highlighted by his lilting mandolin and a collaboration with his friend, the late Harry Nilsson. ~ Sara Sytsma
JACK WILLIAMS “…a gentle but compelling poetic and musical vision.”~ Billboard Weather Report South Carolinian Jack Williams, guitarist/singer/songwriter/storyteller, is outstanding among a handful of artists who - in skill, depth and integrity – stand head and shoulders above the many performers flooding today’s folk circuit. Among acoustic guitarists he is near-legendary. Having avoided the compromises of the commercial music industry during his 45+-year professional career, he prefers touring “under the radar”, playing concerts, large and small, week in, week out, from the sheer love of music and ...
