| | Waylon Jennings Greatest Hits CD Waylon Jennings Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
RCA's nine-track 1979 Greatest Hits collection has since been supplemented by more thorough compilations -- most notably the double-disc sets Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line and RCA Country Legends -- but as a snapshot of Waylon at his outlaw peak, this serves quite well. And, make no mistake, this concentrates solely on the outlaw years, leaving off anything from the '60s, including such defining songs as "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line" and "The Taker." Instead of being hurt by such exclusions, this Greatest Hits gains strength by its sharp focus on the peak of his outlaw years. Each of these nine songs has a nearly mythological pull, presenting ol' Waylon as the Nashville rebel, honky tonk hero, and ramblin' man who stormed through country music in the '70s with his piledriving hardcore country (yet wasn't afraid to show a macho sensitive side, as he did with "Amanda"). He made plenty of other great songs than what's here, especially during the outlaw era, but every tune here is at the core of his legend, which is why this Greatest Hits remains a great listen, even after it's been replaced by more comprehensive collections. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Waylon Jennings Greatest Hits Songs Greatest Hits Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Waylon is a legend..... Dam shame that this album when re-released in 1990 was shorted two tracks!
Those sorry music executives at RCA/BMG screwed the listening public on this one. Now they wonder why we grab our music off the net!! Still if you what classic Waylon originals, try Budda records..... Submitted by a reviewer (Dallas, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Waylon at his best! This is one album I can listen to from start to finish and not have to skip any "less favorite" tracks. They're all great! My only beef, as has been mentioned by another reviewer, is that two tracks were omitted. I also noticed that the guitar parts in "Amanda" are different from the LP, as is one line("I finally made 40 and still wearing jeans" as opposed to "Now I'm over 30 and still wearing jeans"). This is Waylon in his prime, and I'd recommend this collection to anyone who wants to hear the "King of the Outlaws". Submitted by Rick (Oshawa, Ontario) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes ...

Greatest Hits CD music For Sale Pre-Order Now! Available: Tuesday, January 05, 2010
$9.44 Don Cheadle gives a riveting performance as Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of a European-owned hotel in Rwanda, who created a secret refugee camp for the Tutsi people during the brutal genocide committed against them by the Hutu people in 1994. His efforts helped to save 1200 lives out of close to a million who were killed. HOTEL RWANDA shows this man's courage, while also capturing the political events that occurred between April and September '94. First, United Nations soldiers are restricted from fighting back against Hutu guerillas, even after the Rwandan president is assassinated and the country is thrown into chaos. But as the fighting worsens, all non-Rwandans including UN peacekeepers, Europeans, and Americans are evacuated. This leaves the Tutsi people defenseless against aggressive ...
| | What's That I Hear?: The Songs Of Phil Ochs CDs (1998)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$23.79 Well, if everybody else and their brother is getting a tribute album, Phil Ochs should certainly get his slice of the reverential pie. The late, great '60s folk/protest singer-songwriter, despite his early death, was around long enough to leave a substantial legacy of songs that mesh the political with the personal in a daring, innovative manner. Those songs are performed here by a wide-ranging crop of contemporary folkies, both well-known (at least for folkies) and obscure. Unsung legend/onetime Ochs protege Sammy Walker honors his mentor with a faithful take on the piano ballad "Jim Dean of Indiana." Ochs contemporary Dave Van Ronk weighs in with the classic "Oustide of a Small Circle of Friends." Elsewhere John Gorka, David Massengill, Steve Gillette and others lend their voices in service to the Ochs canon. Kudos to PA folk DJ/impresario Gene Shay for putting this 2-disc piece of history together.
2-CD set; 27 artists perform songs written by Phil Ochs inc. Arlo Guthrie, Tom Paxton, The Roches, John Wesley Harding, Magpie, Anne Hills, Greg Greenway, ...

| | Kris Kristofferson Country Collection CD (1998) (Import) Germany
Greatest Hits album
$9.39 The title The Country Collection and the album cover, a photograph of Kris Kristofferson taken in the early '70s, might lead you to think that this British compilation is another of the many international best-ofs containing some combination of Kristofferson's best-known Monument recordings of the '70s. Instead, its 20 tracks consist of the complete contents of the singer/songwriter's two Mercury Records albums, 1987's Repossessed and 1990s Third World Warrior, presented in order. Repossessed, which takes up the first ten selections, was Kristofferson's first solo album in six years and demonstrated that he had become much more interested in politics as subject matter, from a left-wing Christian viewpoint. This was expressed most philosophically in the album's first single, "They Killed Him," which equated the assassinations of various twentieth century political figures with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, though even songs that were nominally about love, such as "The Heart" and "Love ...

$8.65 Prom Kings songs like "Better Man," "Birthday," and "Blow" will slot perfectly next to Seether, Chevelle, and Three Days Grace on modern rock radio. But in case you get lost in similar sounding songs, vocalist Chris Carney drops helpful reminders. "You know the Prom Kings make it last all night!" he says in "Birthday," reiterating later during "Blow" "Girl you're rollin' with the Prom Kings!" The album's pillowy production doesn't allow for many true rock moments -- when choruses do try to kick it in, they usually feature string sections, too. But towards the end of the album "Down" does try on some rock atmosphere, channelling the processed grit of Linkin Park. Aftermath gangsta MC the Game even shows up mid-song for a spirited rap. ~ Johnny Loftus
The Prom Kings are the new bland. Sure, "Better Man," "Birthday," and "Blow" will slot perfectly next to Seether, Chevelle, and Three Days Grace on modern rock radio. But where are the Prom Kings amidst the scrubbed distortion, overdone vocals, ...
