(3 Customer Reviews)
The Pointer Sisters had their run of hit albums on Planet briefly interrupted in the early '80s, when their label rushed out this anthology as their second album of 1982. They were just coming off a huge R&B and pop hit in "Slow Hand," had another song on the R&B charts, and were red hot. This album didn't do much sales-wise, but served to keep their name alive and clear the way for what would prove their biggest album as a group the next year, Break Out. ~ Ron Wynn
Personnel: June Pointer, Anita Pointer, Ruth Pointer (vocals).
Greatest Hits Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Great collection! This great collection is sadly underrated. While it appears to be a somewhat slim compilation, it's actually priceless for the fact that this is the only place where you'll find all of the vital extended 12" versions. There are no edited versions here... all tracks are full-length or more. Over half of these tracks are extended versions. In the 80s, 12" singles were true to the original mix but longer, rather than the tired techno remixes so popular today. This collection showcases a number of brilliant extended mixes from the era. While it may be missing a few tracks, notably "Should I Do It?", don't pass this one up.. no Pointers fan should be without this release, nor should anyone who loves great 80s extended mixes. Grab this before it goes out of print! Submitted by Jeffrey (Wichita, KS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

$34.69 "If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
Nas' 1994 debut album, ILLMATIC, has been called one of the best rap albums of all time, and this followup documents the main reason why: Nas is the supreme lyricist in hip-hop. On the surface he is a gangsta rapper dispensing richly detailed street stories. But Nas speaks in metaphors not easily interpreted, and his songs constantly challenge the listener to see into his innermost thoughts. He dwells neither on what he could be or wants to be, but rather, simply, on what he is. He's one of the few rappers who can fairly be labeled a poet.
IT WAS WRITTEN utilizes the musical talents of street-oriented producers to enhance Nas' feel for reality. Among those producers are Dr. Dre, who collaborates on "Nas Is Coming" in a joint attempt to squash the East Coast/West Coast war.
For his second album, It Was Written, Nas hired a bunch of hip-hop's biggest producers -- including Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Stretch, and Trackmasters -- to help him create the musical bed for his daring, groundbreaking rhymes. Although that rhyme style isn't as startling on It Was Written as it was on his debut, Illmatic, Nas has deepened his talents, creating a complex series of rhymes that not only flow, but manage to tell coherent stories as well. Furthermore, Nas often concentrates on creating vignettes about life in the ghetto that never are apolitical or ambivalent. This time around, the production is more detailed and elaborate, which gives the music a wider appeal. Sometimes this is a detriment -- Nas sounds better when he tries to keep it street-level -- but usually, his lyrical force cuts through the commercial sheen. Combined with the spare but ...
| | Cubanismo Greetings From Havana CD (2007) (Import) Australia
Greatest Hits album
$14.75 On this Grammy-nominated 2007 outing, the Havana-based ensemble Cubanismo! presents another immediately engaging collection of Afro-Cuban tunes. Like the style's elder statesmen, Buena Vista Social Club, the group largely adheres to a vintage sound with deft piano lines, boisterous horn flourishes, and busy rhythms complementing vibrant vocals, as on the festive numbers "Petit Mambo" and "Celebrando."
Greetings from Havana is the follow-up to the internationally acclaimed cross-over album, Mardi Gras Mambo "Cubanismo" (in New Orleans, Billboard Top World Music Albums #9.) Due to constant world touring, this is the first album of new material from Cubanismo in over 6 years. It represents the evolution of the band through that time. Recorded at Abdala ...
