Having made their LP debut with half an album's worth of repackaged oldies, the Sweet then followed through with an entire disc of the things, drawing from both their own recent back catalog and that of songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, to create a record of almost unholy pop pleasure. For the Sweet were not the only arrow in the Chinn and Chapman quiver. They were scoring hits, too, with New World, with their "Tom Tom Turnaround" ranking among the most mawkishly compulsive songs in the duo's entire catalog. Passing it on to the Sweet to cover for their own LP didn't simply make sense from a commercial point of view. It was also the first step toward establishing Chinnichap as a songwriting brand name that would ultimately become as self-sufficient as any Motown, Brill, or Kasenetz-Katz coupling. Two recent Sweet singles, "Funny Funny" and "Co Co," and three B-sides, "Jeanie," "Spotlight," and "Done Me Wrong Alright," do weight this supremely punningly titled set down a little -- add "Tom Tom Turnaround" and the average fan would probably have owned a full half of the record before even picking it up. It should also be acknowledged that the remainder of the record was in no way comparable with the quality of those other songs. A lackluster rendering of "Daydream" and the unappetizing American soft rock stylisms of "Santa Monica Sunshine," "Reflections," "Honeysuckle Love," and "Sunny Sleeps Late" are all little more than bland filler. However, "Chop Chop" absolutely remedies the rest of the album's failings. Another Chinn and Chapman classic, it was originally recorded by singing DJ Tony Blackburn, with members of the Sweet themselves on backing vocals. It failed to take off, and the Sweet add little more to it than Blackburn had already tried. But, in the company of those other hits, its original failure seems incredible -- as incredible, in fact, as the Sweet's own success. ~ Dave Thompson Released at the apex of his popularity, this was Feliciano's most successful album. It reached number two, largely on the strength of his only big hit single, "Light My Fire" (which is featured here). Soulful easy listening is an oxymoron, but this is about as close as that fusion gets to reality, with passionate vocals and virtuosic flamenco guitar. Besides "Light My Fire," it's dominated by interpretations of '60s hits like "Sunny" and "California Dreamin'," as well as three Lennon-McCartney tunes. Noted jazz bassist Ray Brown is one of the supporting musicians. ~ Richie Unterberger
Uncut (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Feliciano's lilt and syncopated stutter proved a winning formula. That vocal delivery never wavered..." Feliciano! $7.99 Signed, Infinity CD“Signed, Infinity” was officially completed in August of 2008. This is my first CD that includes a cover song (“The Lord’s Prayer”). Most of the others are songs I’ve written over the course of many years and there are two new songs on the CD (“Signed, Infinity” and “One Chapter More”).Although the songs are old, the recordings are all new. I recorded all of these songs at my home in Ocala, Florida during the spring and summer of 2008. I used a software program called Acid Pro and, of course, my trusty 12 string acoustic guitar. The first song on “Signed, Infinity,” \"Such Imaginings Go On\", is the oldest song of the collection. I wrote this song when I was eighteen or nineteen years old in 1974. After all these years, the song still reflects a basic belief I have that we are living this lifetime to learn. How those lessons unfold is truly a mystery and often a frustration but through it all, I believe, we become better people. The second song, \"1970 Nova,\" is a song I wrote about being young and fearless. On the surface, it is a song about my old car but, in truth, it is about the spirit we possess when we are young that enables us to pursue our goals with absolute faith. As for the car itself, yes I had a 1970 Nova. I didn’t own it in 1970, though! I owned it toward the end of the 1970s and never doubted its ability to “take me everywhere.” I’d “crank her up and she’d get me there.”“From Zero To Nine” is the third song on the collection and feels like an old friend whenever I “revisit” it. The song is self-explanatory in its reflection of my optimistic nature to believe that “happiness must be from zero to nine.”The fourth song on “Signed, Infinity” is the cover song. It is one of two new songs on the collection. I actually woke up with this song playing in my head in the key of F. I often have a hard time with the F key (on guitar) and so I am actually playing this in E with a capo on the first fret. I love the country flavor of this song. “It’s A Maybe I’ll Find Something To Do Kind Of Day” is a song I wrote as a joke in the 1990s when I worked at a radio station (WTMC). There was a reggae program hosted by a great guy who went on-air by the name Jamaica Joe. I originally recorded this song to sound more reggae than it does on this CD. I recorded it on a radio cartridge (to be used on the air) and labeled it with the artist identified as The Dreadlock Bohemians and slipped it into Joe’s collection. Every now and then I would be driving down the road, listening to Joe, and I would hear him play it. He never knew it was actually me.The fifth song is “Is There A Love Somewhere.” I have always been a sucker for a yearning love song and so I end up writing a lot of them. I’ve always been especially fond of this one. I hadn’t considered this song for this collection because, quite frankly, at this point in my life I’m not actually wondering if there is a love somewhere. I had written this probably ten years ago and the song came to mind after watching the movie, “Wuthering Heights.” It is such a yearning story that, after watching it, I had “Is There A Love Somewhere” playing in my head. I went ...
