I remember Skeeter, like most people, from The End of the World and a couple of Davis Sister numbers. Hearing this album shocked me. With three or four exceptions, the songs weren't very good and Skeeter was frequently off key. I almost wish I hadn't bought it. The End of the World meant a lot to me as a child, and I would have liked to remember Skeeter that way. For die-hard Skeeter fanatics only.

Easy listening
On this CD you`ll find a lot of nice music. Skeeter Davis has been a popular artist also in the Scandinavian countries. She used to be played a lot on radio. I guess this is typical "Nashville Sound" or "Country Pop". Skeeter is backed by piano, strings and the occasional choir. Most of the songs are produced by Chet Atkins. To those of you who likes to listen to the best music of yesterdays, like I do, I can sertainly recomend this CD.

Essential POP country Skeeter
I never liked country much. Over the years one artist then another won me over. Bobby Goldsboro, Roy Clark and now Skeeter Davis. I have liked "end of the world" since it was released. I bought this "essential" collection hoping to get 3-4 more as good as "end of the world". Well, I got more than I bargained for. Of the 20 selections I used 17 of them. "I forgot more than you'll ever know" Skeeter attempts to tell her friend what to expect from her former guy. "I can't help you, I'm falling too" Is an enjoyable love song about 2 people hopelessly falling "No-Never" Skeeter sings about knowing that she could never do better with another guy. "Gonna Get along without you" I survived before, I'll do it again. this one has a way of getting stuck in your head. "I can't stay mad at you" I remembr hearing this (vaguely) on the radio , way back when. It's Skeeters contribution to the "girl-group" craze that ruled for so long until the British invasion. "Silver threads" you may remember hearing the Cowsills record. they did a fine job with it, so did Mary Frances Penick. "Mine is a lonely life" is one I'm especially fond of. "Fuel to the flame" and "what does it take" are 2 more "pop-like" contributions from the young girl from Dry Ridge Kentucky" What's important to remember is that Skeeter was a country singer. Unable to retain radio "play time" on the country stations she drifted into "pop" music quite accidently. While she was riding the country charts with "somebody loves you" a NYC DJ decided to play the "B" side on his radio show. The "B' side was End of the world.Skeeter now had the "A" side riding high on the country charts while the "B" side was flying on the "pop" charts. From there Skeeter (much as Brenda Lee did) enjoyed more and more 'pop' hits. Most noteably "I can't stay mad at you" . Her producer told Skeeter to "take out the shoo-by doo-by" ....if you leave it in, the country stations won't play it. Skeeter told him.....they aren't playing me now. The "shooby-dooby" stayed in and Skeeter had her only "girl-group" smash with " I can't stay mad". All in all, if you like Roy Clark or Bobby goldsboro or if you ever watched hee-haw, this Skeeter collection is lost gold for you. I know it is for me. Actually, after hearing this cd, I came back and ordered Skeeters Pop hits Vol 1 & pop hits vol 2 collection. All together, I bought 71 Skeeter Davis songs and used all but three. All this from a music collector who "doesn't like country". Never say "Never" :-)
