Recorded live at the New Orleans House, Berkeley, California on September 16, 1969. Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin.

It is only fitting that Hot Tuna's self-titled 1969 debut (also known as RECORDED LIVE) would be an in-concert, all-acoustic set. The band would make themselves one of rock & roll's top road dogs during their lengthy career, and would return to acoustic work time and time again. Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen (guitar/vocals) and Jack Casady (bass) launched this side project to co-exist with their full-time job with the band, while musically getting back to their folk/acoustic roots.

The CD reissue adds five songs to the original track listing, rounding out such highlights as "Hesitation Blues" (which would become a stage staple for Tuna), Reverend Gary Davis's "Death Don't Have No Mercy," and "Winin' Boy Blues." There is a great sense of ease and rapport between Kaukonen and Casady, and though the sound is quite minimal--the duo plays alone save some harmonica work from Will Scarlett--HOT TUNA remains one of the band's most satisfying releases.

When Hot Tuna's self-titled debut album was released in May 1970, it seemed like the perfect spin-off project for a major rock group, Jefferson Airplane's lead guitarist and bass player indulging in a genre exercise by playing a set of old folk-blues tunes in a Berkeley coffeehouse. The music seemed as far removed from the Airplane's acid rock roar as it did from commercial prospects, and thus, it allowed these sometimes overlooked bandmembers to blow off some steam musically without threatening their day jobs. In retrospect, however, it's easy to hear that something more was going on. Friends since their teens, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady had developed a musical rapport that anchored the Airplane sound but also existed independently of it, and shorn of the rock band arrangements and much of the electricity (Casady still played an electric bass), their interplay was all the more apparent. Kaukonen remained the accomplished fingerpicking stylist he had been before joining the Airplane, while Casady dispensed with the usual timekeeping duties of the bass in favor of extensive contrapuntal soloing, creating a musical conversation that was unique. It was put at the service of a batch of songs by the likes of the Reverend Gary Davis and Jelly Roll Morton with the occasional Kaukonen original thrown in, making for a distinct style. Kaukonen's wry singing showed an intense identification with the material that kept it from seeming repetitious despite the essential similarities of the tunes. (Harmonica player Will Scarlett also contributed to the mood.) The result was less an indulgence than a new direction. [The 1996 CD reissue added five tracks from the same set of shows, increasing the disc's running time by more than 45 percent. "Belly Shadow" was a lost Kaukonen instrumental. The others would become familiar numbers in Hot Tuna's repertoire.] ~ William Ruhlmann

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Hot Tuna: Jorma Kaukonen (vocals, acoustic guitar); Jack Casady (bass).

Additional personnel: Will Scarlett (harmonica).

Rolling Stone (7/9/70, p.44) - "...Acoustic guitar, electric bass, vocals, and, here and there, a little harp....It is a relaxing album, one to sip wine and sit on the back porch by..."
Goldmine - "Very good performance and sound"

I knew I wanted the expanded and remastered reissue to replace my earlier CD version...it is a Hot Tuna must have. I actually forgot I already had the remastered and expanded version. It made an excellent gift though!!

5 stars A classic remastered with unreleased tracks
This is one of the all-time classic albums of the late 60s (actually released in 1970), reissued with 5 additional tracks from the original live sessions. The remastering job is a big improvement over the original CD release as well, which was very hissy, compared to the LP. This is the first and best of the acoustic Hot Tuna recordings. Any fan of Jorma or Rev. Gary Davis or traditional ragtime-blues should own this. And Jack Casady has never sounded better.

For years, this album was best known for its beautiful cover, a Maxfield Parrish-style pastiche which regularly shows up in collections of the best album covers of all time. The lilting, quiet folk-rock of this San Francisco band, led by David LaFlamme's swirling violin and Patti Santos' soaring vocals, was out of favor for quite some ...

All songs written by Jorma Kaukonen except "99 Year Blues" (Julius Daniels/Torrence), "Keep On Truckin'" (Bob Carleton) and "Let Us Get Together Right Down Here" (Gary Davis). The magnificent, though sometimes top-heavy, splinter group formed by Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen from the Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna allowed two exceptional musicians to stretch out and explore their love of old blues. It also kept them from becoming bored while Grace Slick and Paul Katner gazed at the ocean. A strong feature of this Tuna album was the violin of Papa John Creach. They successfully mixed beautifully evocative instrumentals such as "Highway Song" with traditional ...

Hot Tuna album
CD $6.75  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
By 1974, Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen had already started on his own path with his blues-rock side project, Hot Tuna, but with the Airplane's final flight behind him, he moved definitively beyond electrified psychedelic rock with his first solo album, QUAH. Most of the album is just Jorma and his acoustic guitar, and while this sparse format is ostensibly similar to some of the later Hot Tuna releases, it focuses much more on folk-tinged singer-songwriter balladry than on the country blues favored by Tuna. Those familiar with Jorma's Airplane ballads, such as "Good Shepherd," will recognize the sensibility at work here. Of course, there are some tracks where Jorma showcases his mastery of blues fingerpicking, and even some of the most overtly folkie tracks bear a bluesy tinge, but on the whole, QUAH is of a piece with the troubadour movement that was still all the rage in the mid-'70s. On its first Sub Pop release, 2008's SUN GIANT EP, the heralded Seattle group Fleet Foxes presents a mesmerizing five-song set. Often recalling My Morning Jacket on the British folk kick, the young ...

A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune"). All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth. Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how ...
