| | Yma Sumac Voice Of The Xtabay CD (1950) (Import) Import; United Kingdom
Very Best Of Perry Como
$15.75 2 LPS on 1 CD: VOICE OF THE XTABAY (1950)/INCA TAQUL. Personnel includes: Yma Sumac (vocals); Les Baxter, Moises Vivanco (arranger, conductor). Personnel: Yma Sumac (vocals). Liner Note Author: Joe Foster. Arrangers: Moisés Vivanco; Paul Campbell . As Yma Sumac compilations go, this has one major thing going for it: the sheer length of this single-disc summary, including 26 songs and 77 minutes of music. That's a little more content than the most well-circulated American Yma Sumac anthology (Capitol's The Ultimate Yma Sumac Compilation has, and although there's a good deal of repetition between the discs, each also has a fair amount of material not on the other). As a significant strike against it, despite a well-annotated foldout booklet, this completely omits original release date information, leaving the Sumac novice -- and, most likely, even many who are already fans -- without the barest context with which to judge her progress on record. For those just looking for a lot of Sumac on one little compact disc, though, it does the job, and does include some of her better-known numbers, among them "Babalu," "Inca Waltz," and not one, but two versions of Les Baxter's "Xtabay." There's also a good deal of variety to the arrangements, including fair shares of pseudo-operatic orchestration, Latin-influenced pop, cinematic soundtrack-like backings, commercial folk (a swinging cover of "Wimoweh"), exotica, and mambo, not infrequently combining more than one of those styles. Throughout the album, the sheer range and depth of her voice remains amazing, even if the ...

| | P F Sloan Here's Where I Belong: Best Of The Dunhill Years CD (2008) (Import) United Kingdom
Very Best Of Perry Como
$16.65 2008 collection, a near-complete anthology of this important singer-songwriter's mid-'60s recordings for the Dunhill label. As well as writing hits for numerous '60s chart names, Sloan is an accomplished artist in his own right. This CD gathers together the contents of his two Dunhill albums (minus two tracks that he asked to be excluded) and a number of sides that have only previously appeared on 45s. Among the highlights are Sloan's own versions of his hit songs 'Take Me For What I'm Worth' (the Searchers), 'Eve Of Destruction' (Barry McGuire), 'I Found A Girl' (Jan and Dean) and 'Melody For You' (the Grass Roots). Great sleeve notes from Tim Forster are matched by an incredible selection of period photographs, many of which have never been published before. 27 tracks. Ace.
