SUCKING IN STEREO came less then a year after the stellar and teasing FOR EP FANS ONLY. This was the Figgs's second release as a trio and they're by turns taut, supple, and loopy, as only a great rock & roll band can be.
The set starts with "Opening Night" and a cascading flurry of drums courtesy of Pete Hayes, which then morphs into an exuberant rhythmic foundation replete with perfect handclaps, setting the stage for Mike Gent's guitar and Pete Donnelly's bass to jump in and lock everything together. That they accomplish everything they need to in one minute and 48 seconds is testament how good the Figgs are. And that's just one out of 12 songs. The bowler-hatted, three-piece-suit-wearing figure on the cover of Alkaline Trio's CRIMSON seems emblematic. The edgy, emo-tinged pop-punk group is dressed up a bit here, sporting a wherewithal and sophistication that distinguishes this 2005 release from its previous efforts. In part, this is thanks to producer Jerry Finn (of Green Day and Blink 182 fame), who gives the album an impeccable razor-like sheen, but the clincher on CRIMSON is the quality of the tunes.
