Guided, perhaps, by musical snobbery or roots-rock phobia, some people inexplicably don't like Creedence Clearwater Revival. As the kings of earnest country-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip. But their music stands the test of time with a vengeance. For the doubtful listener, this outstanding, 20-track hits collection has evidence of their greatness in staggering abundance.
Though they produced several excellent albums, Creedence was predominantly a singles band, and CHRONICLE compiles ...
| | Stone Temple Pilots No. 4 CD (1999)
Midas Touch CD music
$8.39 "Down" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
After dabbling in Beatlesque psychedelia on 1996's TINY MUSIC (SONGS FROM THE VATICAN GIFT SHOP, Stone Temple Pilots took a more straightforward rock approach with 1999's NO. 4. During the three years between albums, Scott Weiland released a solo album amidst a sea of personal problems, while the rest of Stone Temple Pilots joined forces with Ten Inch Men vocalist Dave Coutts for the one-off side project Talk Show. The time apart helped contribute to an STP record with much darker overtones than the sunnier TINY MUSIC.
Weiland's lyrics in particular allude to many of ...
| | Pink Floyd Relics CD (1971) Remastered
Midas Touch music CDs
$12.19 RELICS collects Pink Floyd's first two singles, "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play," in addition to tracks from their early albums (1967-1969).
Pink Floyd achieved their greatest success after their enigmatic leader, Syd Barrett, left the band. Originally released in 1971, RELICS documents the transition from Barrett's LSD-influenced psychedelic rock to Waters' ...
| | Gerry & The Pacemakers Best Of Gerry & The Pacemakers - The Definitive Collection. CD (1995)
Midas Touch songs
$11.69 Digitally remastered by Mike Jarratt (February 1991, Abbey Road Studios, London, England).
This collection remains the best compilation of Gerry & the Pacemakers material that one can buy domestically in the United States, and far and away is the easiest good one to find. All of the U.S. chart hits are here, along with many of their better album cuts and B-sides, from "How Do You Do It" to "Girl on a Swing," all in excellent sound (this disc was originally prepared by Capitol Records for release on its own imprint, and then licensed to Collectables), and the notes are also quite thorough. There is only one problem with this disc, and that concerns its focus on their American release history. As their music was issued in the United States, Gerry & the Pacemakers represented the cheerful, upbeat, pop side of the Liverpool scene, and the material featured here all fits that definition. The band did have a harder, somewhat more soulful sound, however, and serious fans are advised to look beyond this disc, to See For Miles Records' British CD The EP Collection -- not only are most of the ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Count Talent & The Originals CD (1978)
Midas Touch album
$15.15 Mike Bloomfield--perhaps best known for his work with Paul Butterfield and Bob Dylan--also had a successful solo career and released several potent collections of Chicago blues. This 1978 release (reissued in 2006) was recorded just three years before Bloomfield's drug addiction claimed his life, although as a player, band leader, and writer, he is still in fine form. This album, featuring an interesting rendition of Leo Sayer's hit song "When ...
| | Shaken & Stirred CD (1997) (Import)
Midas Touch CD music
$11.79 This 1997 release features James Bond-inspired tracks by artists such as Chrissie Hynde, Iggy Pop, Aimee Mann and more.
David Arnold, the composer of the Independence Day soundtrack, assembled a talented roster of musicians for his James Bond project. The tracks include the most famous themes from the super spy series, including "Moonraker," "Diamonds Are Forever," and "Nobody Does It Better." The covers by the Propellerheads, Leftfield, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, and LTJ Bukem are inspired and novel approaches, but it is Aimee Mann who fully claims "Nobody Does It Better" for herself and makes it nearly impossible to believe that she didn't write and record it first. The only real criticism is that it seems too skimpy to have only 11 tracks. Where are the cool reinterpretations ...

| | Led Zeppelin Mothership CDs (2007) Remastered
Midas Touch CD music
$12.15 Upon the release of MOTHERSHIP in 2007, almost three decades after their demise, Led Zeppelin arguably stood as the only other band in rock history to merit space with the Beatles in the greatest-of-all-time debate. While the latter practically invented the how-to guide for composing and recording modern pop, Zeppelin taught the machinery how to rock with a seismic bravado that decades latter still rattles foundations. In the post-Zeppelin era, rock became a synonym for a heaviness intended to both inspire awe and knock you flat with its weight.
The first six Led Zeppelin records contain nary a less-than-stellar track and define perfection as a canon; yet adequately compiling bits and pieces of this remarkable run has always eluded the band. Though this collection is no substitute for the first six records, MOTHERSHIP succeeds as a greatest hits retrospective on two levels: one, as an introduction for neophytes who want all the band's signature songs, and two, as a sound upgrade for completists. (In fact, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones themselves are all given production credit on these blistering remasters.) While many extraordinary gems--"Going to California," "Battle Of Evermore," and "Your Time Is Gonna Come," among them--are left out, no reasonable Zep head can argue with the cuts that are included, from "Communication Breakdown" and "Black Dog" to "Dancing Days," "Kashmir," and "Achilles' Last Stand." In the end, MOTHERSHIP works as a stirring lecture in Zeppelin 101.
Audio Remasterer: John C.F. Davis.
