| | Deniece Williams Change The World CD Deniece Williams Discography of CDs
Sony Music Special Products' Change the World contains ten highlights from Deniece Williams' recordings for Columbia Records, highlighted by the singles "Let's Hear It for the Boy" and "It's Gonna Take a Miracle." Casual fans might have wanted more hits, but the compilers did a nice job of selecting album tracks and also-ran singles, making this a worthwhile sampler, especially considering its budget price. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Change The World Review

Change The World
$6.99 Billy Ocean's Greatest Hits packs nearly all of the singer's charted singles that were on the Jive record label. Ocean scored an impressive run of feel-good Top 40 hits in the mid- to late '80s, including three number one singles, those being the classic post-disco jam "Caribbean Queen," the ballad "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)," and the high-energy pop ditty "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car." Ocean's Top Ten hits, which all appear here, include the dance-pop of "Loverboy" and "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going" (from Jewel of the Nile), the soft ballad "Suddenly," and the soul nugget "Love Zone." The music was irresistibly pop, with some of these songs ranking as the catchiest, most radio-friendly music the '80s had to offer. The only hits not found on this set are the ballad "Love Is Forever" and Ocean's first major U.S. hit, 1976's "Love Really Hurts Without You." The funky, delightful "License to Chill," a Top 40 hit in its own right, is one of two later tracks on this set. The other is the dreadful "I Sleep Much Better (In Someone Else's Bed)." As a final note, "Loverboy," "When the Going Gets Tough," and "Caribbean Queen" are included in their ...
| | Con Funk Shun Spirit Of Love CD (1980)
Change The World
$6.19 All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes using 20-bit technology.
Continuing their association with veteran producer Skip Scarborough and riding high on the success of their prior albums, Con Funk Shun maintain that stride on this album with the funk-dance track "Got to Be Enough." With an energized introduction incorporating their trademark horns, Michael Cooper storms through the verses, while Felton Pilate accentuates the chorus with his high-flying falsetto. Penned by Cooper and Pilate, the single peaked on the Billboard R&B charts at number eight after an 18-week run. The credible yet less popular dance track "Happy Face" slipped into the Billboard R&B Top 100 Singles chart at number 87. On a more serene note, they followed that single up with "By Your Side," a dulcet, easy-flowing composition led by Pilate's consoling vocals, peaking at number 27 on the Billboard R&B charts. "All Up to You," a momentum-building song, and "Honey Wild" did not grace the charts, although they are two splendid ballads. Both songs are complemented by Pilate's vocal creativity. This album exceeded sales of 500,000. ~ Craig Lytle

| | Bronski Beat Age Of Consent CD (1984)
Change The World
$9.29 Bronski Beat's debut album sounds every bit as startling today as it did upon its release in 1984. In a year where the British pop consciousness was dominated by the coy antics and over-the-top production of Frankie Goes To Hollywood, this trio was the anti-Frankie. Over simple, almost minimalistic synths, Glaswegian singer Jimmy Sommerville sings, in a truly scarifying falsetto, blunt, no-nonsense lyrics about the emotional life ...
| | Imagination In The Heat Of The Night CD (1982) (Import) Holland; Netherlands
Change The World
$13.59 U.K. synth-dance trio Imagination's second album was 1982's IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, produced by Tony Swain and Steve Jolley (Spandau Ballet, Bananarama) and featuring three hit singles, "Changes," "Just an Illusion" and "Music and Lights."
Imagination's most substantial moments lie in this seamless sophomore effort. The formula is close to that of 1981's Body Talk: Lee John's angelic and serene falsetto surrounded by Ashley Ingram's voluptuous tenor vocals and darkly textured keyboard riffs and Errol Kennedy's steady, subtle, funky backbeat. Yet the tempo is varied a bit more with the onset of three ballads and some slightly more aggressive up-tempo tracks. Four singles were released to success in the U.K., with three crossing over to U.S. shores: the groovy, underground dance number "Changes" (R&B number 46) with a contagious chorus and nabbing percussion breakdown pattern used throughout the tune; the equally insidious "Just an Illusion" (R&B number 27); the moody title track; and "Music and Lights" (R&B number 52). In addition to these treats, the elegant slow-groover "All Night Loving" and the disco-influenced "Heart ...

| | Bomb The Bass Beat Dis: Very Best Of CD (2002) (Import) Australia
Change The World
$10.49 Aussie 'Best Of' for early pioneers of the UK's house scene who shot to prominence in 1988 with 'Beat Dis' (the 12 inch version is included here), which reached the UK Top 5. 15 tracks including, 'Megablast' (Rap Merlin & DJ Dezire), 'Dynamite Beats', 'On The Cut' (2000 AD) & 'Winter In July' (Ubiquity Mix). 1999 release. Standard jewelcase.
Tim Simenon's Bomb the Bass pet project pumped some of the best acid house straight into late-'80s dance clubs. Best known stateside for the seminal "Beat Dis," similarly groundbreaking slow-beat club groove, and the Burt Bacharach cover "Say a Little Prayer," Simenon's brand of acid-laced rap and snappy sampling kept sweat flowing coast to coast. Unfortunately, by the time the band's second album appeared in 1991, Bomb the Bass was all but forgotten in the beginnings of the grunge backlash. However, the sonics have continued to percolate, hence the welcome appearance of the U.K. compilation Beat Dis: The Very Best Of, which serves up a healthy hodgepodge of hits and a neat tweak for aging ravers' long-lost brain cells. In no particular order, Beat Dis unravels 1988 through 1991, commencing with the 12" version of "Beat Dis" and ending with the absurdly short "Megamix," while hitting all the important points in between. First-wave ...

This CD should greatly interest all Jimmy Smith collectors, including those who already have the original LP. The repertoire is filled with blues and bop standards and the soloing is at a consistently high and hard-swinging level. Jimmy Smith fans will be pleased. ~ Scott Yanow
