$14.29 When it comes to interpreting popular music, many straight-ahead bop and post-bop artists can be quite dogmatic and unimaginative. They're quick to embrace the Tin Pan Alley standards of George & Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Harry Warren, and Rodgers & Hart but, sadly, they suffer from the delusion that rock and R&B songs cannot possibly be relevant to jazz -- heaven forbid they should show some imagination and find the jazz potential in Marvin Gaye, Billy Joel, the Beatles, Prince, or David Bowie. Although the music of Sting (whose pop/rock has often been jazz-influenced) should be a natural choice for jazz improvisers, many ignore him -- many, but not all. Released in 2002, this instrumental, acoustic-oriented post-bop/hard bop disc finds a group of improvisers interpreting ten songs that Sting wrote. A few go back to his years with the Police ("Every Breath You Take" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic"), but ...

$25.29 Collaboration:Throughout my 40 year performance career, I’ve had my share of solo piano gigs throughout New England and New York playing piano bars from Maine to Connecticut to Manhattan but it has always been ensemble work that was always the most exciting. Collaborative art taps the wellspring of creativity. The lone composer/arranger has long been considered the most effective form of musical production from early classical music up through today’s pop. It delivers the greatest controlled form of the composer’s vision. However, the possibilities and risk inherent in collaboration between musicians invites magical chance to enter the process. While a certain amount of leadership is always required, collaboration asks all participants to share the directive and creativity of the process. When control of the final product is entrusted to collaboration, amazing and surprising things can happen. While challenging, the final product becomes the sum-total of the strengths of all involved. When each musician is given the opportunity to tap their creative source and then “dance” with the group, it creates a unique and up-lifting experience for both listener and musician. I’ve been extremely fortunate over the years to perform with some of the finest jazz artists and “side men” in the music business. This CD truly represents the collaborative efforts of all involved including our technical engineering. While I chose most of the songs, some of them were either suggested by members of the group or in one case, actually written on the spot in the studio (“William Tells” by Greg Abate).I am extremely grateful to all who shared their insight, expertise, and creativity that contributed to the making of this CD! - Bill WightmanJazz:When Yogi Berra was asked, “Can you explain jazz?” He answered:“I can’t, but I will. 90% of all jazz is half improvisation. The other half is the part people play while others are playing something they never played with anyone who played that part. So, if you play the wrong part, it’s right. If you ...
