Twelve Yuletide standards along the lines of "White Christmas," "Frosty the Snowman," and "Sleigh Ride." All are arranged more or less along the lines of the classic early Ventures sound, with quotes from Ventures songs like "Walk Don't Run" thrown in, as well as phrases from contemporary hits like "I Feel Fine" and "When You Walk in the Room." If not for the ubiquitous overdubs of annoyingly corny sleigh bells, this would rank among the better rock & roll X-mas albums. But apparently the producers couldn't resist watering down the band's trademark sleek guitar-bass-drums lineup with seasonal flavor. ~ Richie Unterberger
Originally issued on Dolton, this instrumental classic was reissued briefly in 1990 on CD by EMI. The Ventures have a blast with unique covers of secular Christmas songs: each instrumental borrows riffs from popular mid-'60s hits, incorporating them into their twangy guitar yule melodies. "Sleigh Ride" uses The Ventures' own hit, "Walk, Don't Run," while other selections borrow from hits of other artists. It's a gas to hear "Frosty the Snowman" set to The Champs' "Tequila." ~ Dennis MacDonald
Originally released on Dolton Records (8038).

Christmas Album music CDs
$10.49 Thirty-seven years after recording their first Christmas album in 1965, The Ventures recorded a new album for the holidays in 2002.
Recorded in 2002, this Ventures Christmas album -- it's not the first -- puts their trademark crisp and stripped guitar instrumental arrangements upon a bountiful helping of Christmas standards. Indeed, most of the program is given over ...

| | Moody Blues December CD (2003)
Christmas Album album
$8.49 One must give the Moody Blues credit for tenacity and a single-pointed focus. For 37 years they've put forth a startlingly consistent series of themes: optimism, a kind of blind-faith spirituality that the universe is in good hands and that people are by and large decent and kind, and love songs that can be a bit twee, but nonetheless connect when one is in the emotional space to hear them. Their music ...

$15.65 Recorded between 1960 & 1969. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.
For those unfamiliar with the rich legacy of the Everly Brothers, this is the definitive compilation, chronicling their fertile '60s Warner Bros period. The Everly's patented close-harmony sound was unique in pop, but not without precedent in American music. It came from other fraternal duos, those that hailed from the bluegrass ...
| | Angelique Kidjo Black Ivory Soul CD (2002)
Christmas Album album
$7.59 BLACK IVORY SOUL was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best World Music Album.
For the Bill Laswell-produced BLACK IVORY SOUL, Angelique Kidjo's first album since 1998's OREMI, the world music diva explores the link between the Brazilian city of Bahia and her home country of Benin. Befitting her multi-cultural background, Kidjo worked with an impressive range of talent including Brazilians Carlinhos Brown and Vinicius Cantaria, Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson and soul singer Cindy Mizelle. The result is an album's worth of music that's very much percussion-driven and peppered with plenty of irresistible grooves ranging from the life affirming "Tumba," (which is the name for congas in Benin), to the airy, acoustic guitar-dappled "Ominira" (Yoruba for freedom).
Among the few English-language songs are the funky title track with its Fela-lite backbeat and the infectious "Iwoya," seemingly a stab at college radio airplay by way of guest Dave Matthews's vocal contribution. Kidjo also continues her penchant for unusual covers--this time out, Serge Gainsbourg's "Ces Petits Riens" is given a delicate rendering and Gilberto Gil's "Refavela" benefits from a sassy, percussion-soaked ...

| | 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Peter Frampton CD (2003)
Christmas Album music CDs
$9.69 Recorded between 1972 & 1981. Includes liner notes by Scott Schnider.
This is part of "20th Century Masters: The Millenium Collection" series.
Unlike a great many of the entries in the 20th Century Masters series, there actually was a need for a good budget-priced Peter Frampton collection. Sadly, the disc's producers fumbled the ball by including the inferior album version of one of Frampton's biggest hits, "Baby, I Love Your Way," in lieu of the much better live version from the landmark Frampton Comes Alive! record. They did manage to include the live versions of "Show Me the Way" and "Do You Feel Like We Do," but the fatal blow had already been administered. The disc is rounded out by Frampton's biggest hit, the cuddly "I'm in You" from 1977, five tracks from his '70s albums, including his pale cover of Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)," and the title track from 1981's Breaking All the Rules. If they had included the better version of "Baby, I Love Your Way," this disc would have been quite easy to recommend to stingy Frampton fans, but as it is, you might as well spend the extra couple of dollars and move up to 1996's Greatest Hits on A&M. ~ Tim ...
