Razor & Tie's Monster Ballads provides a near-definitive portrait of the golden age of the power ballad, the late '80s/early '90s (henceforth known as the Bush era). Sure, a few of the 16 songs were recorded prior to the Bush era (such as Mike Reno and Anne Wilson's genre-defining "Almost Paradise" or Europe's "Carrie"), and there are a few noticeable omissions (no Bon Jovi or Slaughter, "Something to Believe In" instead of the classic "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" from Poison), but it's hard to argue with almost everything here. Nearly every classic power ballad is here -- "Heaven," "High Enough," "Is This Love," "To Be With You," "Don't Know What You Got Til It's Gone," "More Than Words," "Headed for a Heartbreak," "When I See You Smile," "When I'm With You," and the Scorpions' end of the Cold War epic "Winds of Change" -- and those that don't quite make "classic" status are usually listenable (with the notable exception of Steelheart's "I'll Never Let You Go [Angel Eyes]). Ultimately, the missing tracks and the mediocre cuts don't drag down the disc, since the core of this collection consists of the best power ballads known to man. What exactly that means is subject to interpretation. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

4 stars Half of the Ballads
Here are some wonderful "soft yet metal" songs that were heard on the radio. However, this album contains only about half of the songs that are found on the original collection, available from the source store. It contained 35 hits, but that edition cost about $26. If you want the whole deal, go for that collection. Yet, on the other hand, the sixteen songs on this version are some of the better ones picked from the original disc.

Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much ...

Monster Ballads album
CD $9.55  3.5 stars
The sincerity of their days on A&M Records has turned to total formula by the time Dr. Heckyl & Mr. Jive came around -- and Robert Louis Stevenson expert, author Ray McNally, makes it clear in his book on Mr. Hyde that the true pronunciation is Dr. Jeekill (as in, "I Kill and Hide"). It is quite a paradox that this justified attack on the Hollywood system uses the mispronunciation of this famous title which Hollywood forced upon the world. Were these singers that clever to have slipped this in as a sly parody? Probably not -- because the sentiment in the poem here is right on, but the execution of the title track, is as musically contrived as it sounds. This album shows the worst, and the best, ...

If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their fifth of six. "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again" was written by Jeffrie Comanor and is far and away the best song on the album. This duo knew how to interpret; they ...

The beginning of Defender starts at the end of 1984 when guitar player Bart decided to leave Hammerhawk, his present band at that time. At a concert of Ronnie James Dio and Queensryche in Amsterdam Bart and drummer Remco met eachother for the first time and started rehearsing the first songs. Soon after their first meeting vocalist Simon and bass player Harm joined the band and after a couple of months this line-up recorded their first demo 'Tales of the unexpected' at the Oktopus studio in the beginning of 1985. Immediately after recording this demo the band found a second guitarplayer: Jozzy and serious live action began. During 1985 and 1986 Defender played a lot of gigs in the Netherlands as headliner and together with Martyr, Alied Forces, Hammerhawk, Cyclone and Agent Steel. At the same time the demo was spreading all over the world and resulted in many possitive reactions. Due to musical and personal differences the band decided quit working with Jozzy in the summer of 1986 and was replaced by Stef, who was 15 years old at that time and already very talented. Also Bart couldn't combine his daytime job with playing guitar and was replaced by Henk, one of the guitarplayers of Angantyr. From this moment the band had a new, young, talented guitar duo and began writing songs the way they wanted: melodic up-tempo songs. With only one demo-tape made the last two years it was very hard to get a record-deal, ...
