Monster '80s certainly lives up to its name, collecting some of the decade's most memorable singles, from the suave, sophisticated pop of Spandau Ballet's "True" to the ultra-perky cheerleader chant of Toni Basil's "Mickey." The Stray Cats' "Stray Cat Strut" and Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes" relive the '50s via the '80s, while Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" and Huey Lewis & the News' "If This Is It" are perfect examples of the decade's mainstream rock sound. A-Ha's "Take On Me," Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy," and After the Fire's "Der Kommissar" represent different strains of '80s synth-pop, and Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf," and Men at Work's "Who Can It Be Now?" exemplify new wave's pop heights. Tracks from Mr. Mister, Thomas Dolby, Billy Idol, and the Bangles round out this entertaining '80s compilation. ~ Heather Phares
Dust off your stone-washed jeans and dig out your black vent brush. The mega-hits of the '80s are back in the aptly titled MONSTER '80s. Pop-rock mavens Tears For Fears and Duran Duran deliver well-crafted synth/guitar rock tracks with "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Hungry Like the Wolf," respectively. After singing background vocals for Rod Stewart, Kim Carnes stepped out front and immortalized a legend with "Betty Davis Eyes." Soap opera heartthrob Rick Springfield makes everyone want "Jessie's Girl."
Dexy's Midnight Runners had their 15 minutes of fame with "Come on Eileen," while the powerful reworking of Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter" was a benchmark for the Bangles. In "Goody Two Shoes," Adam Ant made it hip to be square, while Men At Work made paranoia all the rage in "Who Can It Be Now." Madness hit home in "Our House," while dancer Toni Basil had people clapping their hands in syncopation for "Mickey." Gritty '50s rock never had cat class and style until the Stray Cats brought the "Stray Cat Strut" out of the alley and into the Top 10. It's not the beast under your bed, but Monster '80s is a pop-rock collection to be reckoned with.

Live Recording Personnel: Ted Valekis (banjo); Chris Palladino (piano, organ); Andrew Smith (percussion).

Arranger: Chris Palladino.
Never quite at home on the overtly Christian record label Tooth & Nail, the Danielson Famile moved over to the Indiana-based indie label Secretly Canadian for their fifth release, Fetch the Compass Kids. Tooth & Nail, with its roster of mostly punk and emo bands, never seemed to know what to do with Danielson's quirky, largely unclassifiable pop, and the band suffered from poor support as a result -- despite winning accolades from such high-profile publications as Spin and the Village ...

Liner Note Author: Al Fichera.
First assembled in 1981 by the Special Products (i.e., budget) division of what used to be called CBS Records, subsequently reissued by the company after it had been sold to Sony, and, in 2002, licensed to Collectables for its Priceless Collection series, this compilation of Bobby Vinton recordings made for Epic Records in the 1960s and early '70s has always suffered from its grandiose and inappropriate title. There are great hits included on the ...

Gap Band Greatest Hits CD  (1998)

Monster '80S
CD $6.45  4 stars Audio Samples
Compared to the many other Gap Band compilations, this Greatest Hits -- from Collectables' Priceless Collection series, released in 2004 -- falls near the bottom of the stack. Even if it's clearly a budget release, there's no point in issuing another skimpy and spotty overview of the band's career. No "You Dropped a Bomb on Me," no "Early in the Morning," no "Outstanding," no "Beep a Freak," no "Jam the Motha." Most of the hits one would use as the foundation of a Gap Band anthology are left off. This is an extremely random sampling, and the odds of someone obtaining all the Gap Band he or she needs right here are about one in ten million. Just about any other set -- including Mercury's The Best of the Gap Band and Hip-O's Ultimate Collection -- are far more ...

The Hidden Cameras--all 13 of them--make a big, joyful racket, full of glockenspiel, strings, pianos, guitars, vocals, and intricate arrangements that belie the simple heartfelt nature of leader Joel Gibb's songs. Like labelmates and fellow Canucks Broken Social Scene, the band angles for ambitious vistas and succeeds a good deal of the time, equally adept at big, polyphonic production numbers ("Death of a Tune," "Awoo"); elegant, restrained chamber songs ("Fee Fie"); and PET SOUNDS-ian pop anthems ...
