| | Andrea Bocelli Romanza CD (1997)
Chopin: Complete Nocturnes / Livía RÉV
$10.49 Andrea Bocelli was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Joe Amoruso (melodica, piano, synthesizer, keyboards, programming); Guido Corti (French horn); Mauro Malavasi (piano, keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Maurizio Abeni (piano); Luca Bignardi (keyboards).
Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli is one of those rare artists who is equally comfortable on both sides of the pop/classical fence. Discovered by Italian pop sensation Zucchero, Bocelli, whose blindness is no hindrance to his musical insight, has made an international splash in both the pop and opera worlds. He's worked with Luciano Pavarotti and Bryan Adams with equal ease, and his all-encompassing musical prowess can be easily heard on ROMANZA. The album weaves his strong, expressive, classically-trained voice through some elegant contemporary material. Many songs have a political bent that brings to mind the socially-conscious lyricism of artists like Milton Nascimento. Roll over, Luciano, and tell Michael Bolton the news.

Chopin: Complete Nocturnes / Livía RÉV
$10.85 World Groove Boutique is exactly what it says it is: two discs of electronica morphing, appropriating, and utterly deconstructing the music of the world for the dancefloor. There is everything from techno to progressive house, from digital dub to trance, to nu breaks and tribal house here. There are some fine sampling moments, but after a while all of these tracks simply begin to run together and bleed through. The result is a new kind of easy listening exotica like the music made by Martin Denny, Les Baxter, and Esquivel back in the day, but far less imaginative. It's clever, but nothing really stands out and grabs you. It's fine music for a cocktail party or for shagging, but that's about the extent of its appeal. ~ Thom Jurek
