$10.15 | | Dave Fischoff Winston Park CD (1998)
Pergolesi: Stabat Mater, Etc /Fisher, Chance, King's Consort
$13.15 The low hum at the beginning of Winston Park introduced indie rock fans to the calculated and deliberate slow rock of singer/songwriter Dave Fischoff. The first track, "Happy Birthday, Dear Norman," creatively utilizes "found sounds" to create a mysterious opus. That song seamlessly blends into the second track, "First Sleep After the Riots," where listeners first hear Fischoff's clean guitar work combined with his controlled, Robyn Hitchcock-like vocals. The song maniacally utilizes noise to create a sonically diverse song. The disjointed and scrapbook style of sounds continues on "For the Ones Who Fall in Love on Buses." Fischoff's echoing vocals on "Photo From a Car in Winter," combined with a wave of distortion, create an atmospheric feel to the song. The disc comes to a close with "Breakfast in Covington, GA." The song starts off with a single guitar chord, followed by Fischoff's hushed vocals. While the music rarely rises above a relaxed, slow-motion feeling, Fischoff is able to adequately translate beauty and pain through his music. The disc was released on Indiana's Secretly Canadian Records in 1998. ~ Stephen Cramer

| | Dave Fischoff Ox & The Rainbow CD (2001)
Pergolesi: Stabat Mater, Etc /Fisher, Chance, King's Consort
$12.19 Dave Fischoff basks in sentimental storytelling and simple recording techniques on the eight-song The Ox & the Rainbow. The disc opens with the operatic "A Nap at Truthtime, Some Magic Slips Away." With that opening track, it's easy to see why Fischoff is so often compared to the likes of Cardinal, Richard Davies, Alastair Galbraith, and Chris Knox. That opener seamlessly gives way to "Blemish and a Bowl of Oranges," which includes steady guitar with church-bell-like arrangements. Throughout, the lyrics are poignant and poetic and the music is original and engaging, creating a whirlwind of intriguing musical moments. The sparseness of "We Break up and Watch the Angels Swim" is countered by the frenzied-yet-subdued pop of "Propaganda for a Comic Strip." Like the first track, Fischoff's voice is the prime instrument on "The Science of Raindrops." The disc ends with the simple and atmospheric "Geranium." The disc is a strong leap forward from his debut, the super-quiet and reserved Winston Park. The album was recorded in 2000 in Chicago and Bloomington, IN. Secretly Canadian Records released the disc in early 2001. ~ Stephen Cramer

$9.05 This CD also includes a 1'28" spoken word track by Keith Lockhart serving as an introduction to the medley "Long Live the King - A Tribute to Elvis."
Among America's most popular entertainers, the Boston Pops thrill audiences with their renditions of the classics and innovative expression of musical trends. ENCORE! celebrates the Pops' fifth year of recording under the leadership of Keith Lockhart, it collects favorite tracks from past recordings.
From traditional pieces like "Song of the Volga Boatmen" to more contemporary hits, such as "Riverdance," the Pops deliver hearty, feel-good performances. They don't shy away from adding unconventional instruments to the orchestration: "Riverdance" includes an electric fiddle, synthesizer and guitar. Alongside perennial favorites like "Stars and Stripes Forever," they add surprises, such as the bonus track "Long Live the King! - A Tribute to Elvis," recorded live at Symphony Hall. This medley of "Jailhouse Rock, "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Hound Dog" embodies the irreverent spirit that makes the Boston Pops a national treasure.
| | Piazzolla: Five Tango Sensations / Kronos Quartet, Piazzolla CD (1991)
Pergolesi: Stabat Mater, Etc /Fisher, Chance, King's Consort
$9.89 The undisputed lord of nuevo tango, Astor Piazzolla conceived of five tangos, written for himself on bandoneon, and the Kronos Quartet on strings. The neo-classical style of Kronos fits surprisingly well on Piazzolla's new style of tango and provides a wonderful backing for the maestro at work. Though there are only five songs on the album, the title fits well, Five Tango Sensations. Each of the tangos presented is a sensation and conveys the full emotion or scene given in the titles: "Asleep," "Loving," "Anxiety," "Despertar" (waking up), and "Fear." Piazzolla plays his heart out on his trusty bandoneon, and the Kronos players accompany to perfection. If it's the tango that the listener wants, Piazzolla is the man to listen to. ~ Adam Greenberg
