TRULY WESTERN EXPERIENCE is the second release from Canandian country pop singer K.D. Lang. k.d. lang's first independent album is an uneven but exciting revamp of '50s country. She alternates between rocking honky tonk numbers and Patsy Cline-influenced weepers, sometimes assuming an ironic distance. It may be flawed, but A Truly Western Experience has an almost punky kick and illustrates why lang would soon be considered as the freshest female vocalist in country music in the late '80s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The big second album from the big boned gal from Alberta. It's a wild, wacky hodgepodge of country meets punk and one woman's attempt to bridge the two. Her great and now legendary voice wins the day and this disc is an important piece of the lang puzzle, essential for completists. | | Doc Watson CD (1964)
Truly Western Experience
$10.49 Solo performer: Doc Watson (vocals, guitar, 5-string banjo, harmonica). Includes liner notes by Ralph Rinzler. Watson's arrival on the folk scene of the '60s was a major event in American music, due mostly to his appearance at the 1963 Newport Folk Festival and the release of this self-titled album the following year. Not only did it revolutionize folk guitar picking, but it set the standard for the rest of his career with its mix of old-timey numbers, blues, gospel, and adapted fiddle tunes. The album is incredibly varied, from the stark, banjo-driven "Country Blues" to the humorous "Intoxicated Rat," and many of these songs became Watson standards, especially his signature song "Black Mountain Rag." His incredible flat-picking ...

| | Jeanie Stanley Baby Girl: A Tribute To My Father, Carter Stanley CD (2005)
Truly Western Experience
$15.19 Tributee: Carter Stanley. Personnel: Jeanie Stanley (vocals, baritone); Jeanie Stanley; Ralph Stanley II (vocals, bass voice, guitar, resonator guitar); John Rigsby (vocals, mandolin); Joe Issacs, Stacy York (vocals); Jack Cooke (double bass); Ralph Stanley (vocals, tenor); James Alan Shelton (guitar); Steve Sparkman (banjo); Todd Meade (fiddle). Audio Mixers: Joe Isaacs; Alan Maggard. Liner Note Author: Gary B. Reid. Bluegrass musician Carter Stanley died on December 1, 1966, at the age of 41. His youngest child, Jeanie Stanley, was four years old at the time. Nearly 39 years later, this album presents that daughter's tribute to a father she barely knew and has come to appreciate mainly for his music. But, even though Jeanie Stanley was the motivating factor in getting the album made, it should not be understood as a solo recording, even if her name is on the cover. That cover also contains the words "Featuring: Ralph Stanley, Ralph Stanley II [Ralph Stanley's son], Carter Stanley," and it might better have been billed to the Stanley family rather than to Jeanie Stanley. In fact, there are several selections on the album, beginning with the leadoff track and title song (which Carter Stanley wrote for his older daughter, Doris Stanley) on which Jeanie Stanley does not appear at all. She does take over lead vocals on the second ...

| | Todd Agnew Better Questions CD (2007)
Truly Western Experience
$11.49 Contemporary Christian artist Todd Agnew had three albums under his belt before 2007's BETTER QUESTIONS was released, each refining his blend of grunge-inspired rock and thoughtful religious messages. BETTER QUESTIONS continues the trend by offering up 16 guitar-driven songs that grapple with the quest of spiritual devotion and personal salvation in the modern world. Agnew's hard-hitting but highly accessible sound is equaled by the passion of his conviction, a truth underscored in tracks like "If You Wanted Me" and his take on the hymn "Glorious Day" (added to the CD as a bonus track). Todd Agnew is serious about his Christianity, and he's serious about prodding his co-religionists to move beyond what he calls the "everything is fine" attitude and start truly engaging with some difficult questions about their place and proper function in a corrupt world. Hence, the album's title. But while his heart is obviously in the right place, the musical expression of his heartfelt sentiments on this, his fourth release, is problematic ...
