Simon Cowell's "man band" creation Il Divo bring their perfect hair and immaculate throats into the crowded holiday genre with the creatively titled Christmas Collection, a heavily decorated box of yuletide favorites that dutifully showcases each tenor's captivating voice. There's not much difference between this offering and the myriad of similarly themed releases from contemporaries like Celtic Tenors, Josh Groban, and Charlotte Church, but it's a pleasant enough deviation from your parents' Mannheim Steamroller record. ...

| | Ion Petre Stoican Sounds From A Bygone Age Vol. 1 CD (2006) (Import)
Carver:Scottish Renaissance Polyphony
$18.75 Personnel: Ion Petre Stoican (vocals, violin); Nicu Sapteluni, Marian Grigore, Nicu Manole, Guta "Toi" Vasile, Matei Niculescu (violin); Ionica Minune, Viorel Fundament, Ionica Minune (accordion); Mieluta Bibescu, Grigore Vasile (clarinet); Costel Vasilescu (trumpet); Mihai "Rita" Gheorghe, Fane Negrila (double bass); Toni Iordache. Recording information: Tomis Studio, Bucharest, Romania (1966-1977). Translator: David Berry. Whether the 1960s and '70s qualify as a bygone age is a matter for debate, but it's a lovely surprise to have the only record by Romania's Ion Petre Stoican in print. He'd recorded four tracks in 1966, leveraging the fact he'd been caught as a spy into a record release, and some years later managed to use that fame to go back into the studio with a crack band to record regional wedding music. The results are quite spectacular. Stoican himself is an excellent violinist (although his singing on "Ia-Ti Mireasa, Ziua Buna," with its mannered high style, isn't easy listening) with plenty of flair, and cimbalom player Toni Iordache flies all over the disc. Although it's very rooted in the country, at times, such as with "Mosule, Te-As Intreba," you could almost be listening ...
| | Nancy Garniez Piano Works By Haydn CD (2005)
Carver:Scottish Renaissance Polyphony
$18.99 Nancy Garniez: Soloist; chamber musician; innovative teacher of students of all ages; author, in addition to numerous articles: What Might It Mean? An Uncommon Glossary of Musical Terms and Concepts for the Stuck, Bored, and Curious, 1999. Ms. Garniez is the creator of TONAL Refraction® a method that enables individuals to visualize the difference between their innate perception of tone and the abstractions they have learned in the process of mastering theory and technique. Created in 1993, it has proven to be a powerful restorative tool in a broad range of cases of musical need, from chronic pain to inability to read music—even to focal dystonia. For more information go to www.tonalrefraction.com. Born and raised in Chicago (where she studied with the beloved Chauncey L. Griffith) Nancy Caballero Garniez has played the piano all her life, but spent her undergraduate years concentrating on the organ, which she studied with Fenner Douglass, and subsequently on a Fulbright grant with Helmut Walcha in Frankfurt am Main. She has many years of experience as a liturgical musician in addition to her other professional activities. For over 25 years she led an a cappella singing group as an experiment to enable people to sight-sing music of all styles in tune. Her teaching career began with an appointment at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. She has lived in New York City since 1961 and taught at the Mannes College Preparatory and Extension Divisions since 1972. Coordinator of Chamber Music at Mannes College The New School for Music Extension Division (1984-2008); founding spirit of Alaria (Ensemble-in-Residence at Mannes since 1984). (As of 2008 she is no longer associated with Alaria.) In some circles she is best known as the mother of singer/ song-writer/versatile accordionist/pianist/player-of-the-plastic-bells Rachelle Garniez. In other circles she is known as the mother of French horn player Jacob Garniez.Garniez's goal in making this CD was to produce a recording that could be listened to repeatedly without any loss of involvement on the part of the listener. How successful she was in attaining that goal is clear in the following reviews."Pianist Nancy Garniez, a recognized fixture of the New York musical scene for several decades, is a founding member of the Alaria Chamber Ensemble and a highly regarded teacher of piano and chamber music at the Mannes College of Music. In this new solo CD she brings her elevated musical sensibilities to bear on Haydn's piano music, showing herself equally attuned to his early rococo style and his late proto-romanticisms. In all these works, she shapes the melodic lines elegantly and naturally, like a singer or instrumentalist might. Tempos are flexible but never unduly stretched or pushed, dynamics are judicious, and her touch is well varied. In short, she seems to have the sound of Haydn's fortepiano well in mind, and the close-miked sound (taped in a living-room situation before a live audience) adds to the uniqueness of this disc. In the earlier works, she brings ordinary scale passages and rhythmic patterns to life without sounding self-conscious or eccentric, just as-at the other end of the spectrum-she brings to the climax of the late, great F Minor Variations a wonderful sense of fire and freedom. The naturalness of a live performance is captured perfectly, as is the artist's fine sense of rhetoric without bombast." - Charles Timbrell(Prof. of Piano, Howard University;author of French Pianism: A Historical Perspective and of Prince ...
