Changui is the acoustic cousin of son, a rougher style of dance music that evokes the smaller towns and villages of Cuba, as opposed to the brassy mambo style made popular in the big cities. These live field recordings by two fine bands offer a delicious taste of this exciting style. Groove to the polyrhythms of Grupo Changui on "Chubi Chubi" or the calypso flavors of Estrellas Campesinas on "Hoy es la Dia."
Producers Dita Sullivan and Harold G. Hagopian were wise to capture the music live rather than canning its spirit in the studio, and the result is a vibrant document. ~ Tim Sheridan

| | Rhythms Del Mundo: Cuba CD (2006)
Changui CD music
$15.65 Turning the covers album concept on its head, Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba doesn't set a varied group of northern artists loose on the music made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club, but instead sets the Club's members lose on the northerners' own songs. Now that's an inspired idea, and all to aid charities assisting the victims of natural disasters and raising awareness of climate change. However, to call this a covers album is a bit misleading, as most of the songs feature the original vocals, and occasionally some of the original instrumentation, but it's not a remix project either, as the Social Club add their own music to the original recordings. So, it's a grand fusion of Cuban and northern sounds. And eclectic to boot, with songs contributed by such international artists as Quincy Jones, Sting and U2, as well as the likes of Radiohead and Coldplay. But to give the set a real frisson, the Social Club also took on such younger, feted artists as Franz Ferdinand, Maroon ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Changui music CDs
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of My Heart," the softly soulful "Perfectly Lonely." Here, ...

| | William Thomas Notes From A Drummer CD (2002)
Changui songs
$14.69 As with many of the artists on Seattle's Origin label, William Thomas is an excellent jazz drummer. Here on his debut as a leader, the Portland native spends an hour of quality time with his set, but more important to the album is the time he spent with his score sheets. The feature here is the quality of composition that he's been able to put together a number of times, culminating in a series of quite worthwhile numbers. As is not necessarily the norm for drumming bandleaders, Thomas keeps largely to himself, using the drums not for major solos and spotlight-grabbing moves, but to color and shape the music and let the rest of the band do the majority of the work melodically. Here, the performance is perhaps highlighted mainly by the constant workouts from the horn section, with John Gross on tenor, Troy Grugett on baritone, Warren Rand on alto, and Dick Titterington on trumpet. They're capable of keeping up with the most intricate interweaving and counterpoint just as easily as the most basic of parallel lines. Randy Porter does an excellent job on the piano as well and, along with Tom Wakeling on bass and Thomas on drums, completes a rhythm section worthy of the compositions and the fine horn work. The music itself grooves through the post-bop feel quite ...

| | Fairport Convention XXXV: 35th Anniversary Album CD (2002) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; Reissue; United Kingdom
Changui CD music
$16.75 The legendary Fairport Convention reunited for an anniversary concert in 2002, and XXXV captures the magic of their performance at the Anvil Theater in Basingstoke, England. The quintessential British folk-rock band of the 1960s, Fairport Convention distinguished itself by basing its sound on traditional British folk, but transforming it with a modern sensibility and the superb musicianship of the band's members. That alchemy is still in evidence decades later in these charged performances that include some of the band's best-loved tunes.
XXXV, despite the title, is not a retrospective compilation; nor is it entirely an album of re-recordings of classic Fairport material by the turn-of-the-century lineup of fiddler Ric Sanders, mandolinist Chris Leslie, drummer Gerry Conway and stalwarts Simon Nicol on vocals and guitar and Dave Pegg on vocals and bass. The set combines reworked versions of Fairport gems like the Richard Thompson/Dave Swarbrick classic "Now Be Thankful" mixed with new material largely from the pens of Sanders and Leslie.
While the current band contains no powerhouse soloists on the level of Thompson or Swarbrick, the interplay between the musicians is, as always, sterling. The fiddle medley "Everything But the Skirl" features Sanders and Leslie going all out in an old-fashioned cutting competition, with Pegg, Nicol, and Conway providing dead-on support. This track and the old-fashioned Morris tune "The Happy Man" prove that there's still much viability in this venerable ...

| | Handshake Murders Usurper CD (2007)
Changui album
$11.85 Death metal fans being a funny sort, many bands can often be respected as much for their instrumental wizardry and inventive, atypical arrangements, as they are choruses and hooks -- traditionally the elements perceived as crucial to good songwriting. Of course the most successful death metal bands in the long run are those who excel in both regards; ready examples in this regard proving as diverse and unique in their own way as Florida's Death and Sweden's Opeth and Meshuggah. The latter clearly constitute a major source of inspiration for Arkansas' the Handshake Murders and their first album, Usurper, as ...
