There are wilder surf songs. There are more frenzied surf songs. But no surf song is cooler than the Chantays' "Pipeline." Surfers used the term to describe riding the tunnel of water formed by a cresting wave, and this instrumental is as weightless and sparkling as its titular inspiration. Unusually for a surf song, "Pipeline" is built on Rob Marshall's twinkling, jazz-tinged electric piano, with Bob Spickard's deep-toned, twangy lead guitar held in check alongside Brian Carman's clockwork rhythm guitar part except for a pair of restrained, almost elegant solos. Unlike many surf compilations, SURFIN' HITS does the listener the service of including five vocal surf songs (two each by the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean, and the Tradewinds' glorious dude-out-of-water goof "New York's a Lonely Town") alongside 13 surf-guitar classics.

Surfin' Hits album
$6.55 This 1995 reissue of THE WHO SELL OUT includes songs and jingles not available on the original version.
Originally released on Track (612002/613002). Released in the U.S. on Decca (4950/74950) in 1968.
Only three albums into its recording career, the Who had already begun to distance itself from its proletarian R&B beginnings. Here, songwriter Pete Townshend follows up on the rock-opera idea he had introduced on A QUICK ONE with the extended, multi-part composition "Rael" and would later expand upon with TOMMY. The band had also begun exploring the form of the concept album. The songs are connected by bits of fake radio commercials and brass fanfares, ...

| | Super Hits Of The '70S: Have A Nice Day, Vol. 10 CD (1990)
Surfin' Hits songs
$9.09 On their 15th go at '70s song archaeology, Rhino dishes up the decade's kaleidoscopic music menu in all its intriguing and over-the-top glory. Tapping the 1975-1976 period, the 12 cuts take in indelible novelties (C.W. McCall's 18-wheeler hit "Convoy"), '50s nostalgia (Pete Wingfield's "18 With a Bullett"), Defranco Family-issue kitsch (David Geddes' "Run Joey Run"), and glam pop (Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night"). There's also plenty of soul and funk variants, like Jigsaw's disco symphonic "Sky High," Joe Frank Hamilton's blue-eyed "Fallin' in Love," and Hot Chocolate's dancefloor-filling "Sexy Thing." The maturation of the singer/songwriter is also essayed (Janis Ian's still-solid "Seventeen"), while a country tearjerker finds its crossover legs (Jessi Colter's "I'm Not Lisa"). A few ...

| | Peter Frampton Now CD (2003)
Surfin' Hits album
$13.35 "I'm back" acknowledges Peter Frampton in the song of the same name from his first studio album in nine years. But even though Frampton claims he had complete control over every aspect of this release, the results show that maybe a good A&R person should have been hired for consultation. While this is undoubtedly a Frampton disc, complete with strummy ballads, a handful of harder-edged tunes, and lots of shimmering guitar solos, songs like the riff rocker "I'm Back" -- that sports puerile lyrics such as "I'm back, like Schwarzenegger in Terminator, I'm back like a boomerang" -- could use some tinkering. Otherwise, little has changed over the decades since Frampton's superstar days. He can still write a pretty Beatles-esque ballad like this disc's charming "Above it All." However, the sap factor is far too high on the ...
