| | Bar-Kays Soul Finger CD Bar-Kays Discography of CDs
On the Bar-Kays' first album, it's obvious why they were constantly lauded by legends such as Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper as key soul music innovators. SOUL FINGER, the only release by the original lineup before the tragic December 1967 plane crash that killed Otis Redding and four of the band (they reformed in 1968), contains 11 instrumental tracks, each of them catchy, danceable and all around attention-grabbing.
SOUL FINGER is marked by Phalon Jones and Ben Cauley's infectious horn riffs and Jimmy King's sparse yet sensitive guitar work. Add Ronnie Caldwell's bluesy organ and Carl Cunningham's rock steady grooves, and you've got a hypnotic recipe for down-home Memphis soul. Songs such as "You Can't Sit Down" and "Bar-Kay's Boogaloo" are ideal party tunes. Energetic and life affirming, this music is simply contagious.

| | Curtis Mayfield Curtis CD (1970) Deluxe Edition
Soul Finger music CDs
$8.89 CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts the shiftlessness of America. Set to a funky groove, with smart horn arrangements and wah-wah guitar, this song is a brazen attack on social mores, racism, the Vietnam War, religious impropriety, and Nixon-era politics.
"We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" is another track that poignantly examines the race and class struggles of urban America. This song is made up of more than just a static groove; its tempos shift midway through and powerful brass figures, timpani punctuations, and harp glissandos soon dominate the mix. Also featuring the powerful "Move On Up," CURTIS is a classic soul record, and its relevance is amplified by ...
| | Donald Byrd Black Byrd CD (1973)
Soul Finger songs
$8.25 Purists howled with indignation when Donald Byrd released Black Byrd, a full-fledged foray into R&B that erupted into a popular phenomenon. Byrd was branded a sellout and a traitor to his hard bop credentials, especially after Black Byrd became the biggest-selling album in Blue Note history. What the elitists missed, though, was that Black Byrd was the moment when Byrd's brand of fusion finally stepped out from under the shadow of his chief influence, Miles Davis, and found a distinctive voice of its own. Never before had a jazz musician embraced the celebratory sound and style of contemporary funk as fully as Byrd did here -- not even Davis, whose dark, chaotic jungle-funk stood in sharp contrast to the bright, breezy, danceable music on Black Byrd. Byrd gives free rein to producer/arranger/composer Larry Mizell, who crafts a series of tightly focused, melodic pieces often indebted to the lengthier orchestrations of Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield. They're built on the most ...

| | Gun Club Miami CD (1982)
Soul Finger CD music
$11.15 While the Gun Club's debut, FIRE OF LOVE, was a masterpiece of untamed punk blues, follow-up album MIAMI, produced by Blondie's Chris Stein, achieves a fuller sound and a more varied stylistic palette without sacrificing any of its predecessor's intensity. The revved-up blues of yore are still here ("Devil in the Woods," "Fire of Love"), but wild-child singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce and company also tackle everything from Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Run Through the Jungle" (in a surprisingly faithful ...

| | Swamp Cranks The Tapes CD (2007)
Soul Finger CD music
$13.95 The Swamp Cranks Story September, the year was 1960, William Bennett of Scottish descent, and his wife had just birthed a boy in Toronto, Canada. The young skin and bone baby Bennett was unaware that some 4000 miles away during the preceding month, a Welsh born travelling preacherman named Victor Donovan and his wife had birthed a child of similar ilk. The child, English born, was Dan Donovan. August 1983. The wandering Mr Bennett junior made home in Essex, England. It was in a field, a gathering, a festival, around 1986, where the two musicians Mr Bennett and Dan Donovan first met. Mr Bennett returned to his land of origin in 1988 but the two potential Swamp Cranksters would meet up and play their songs to each other on rare and special occasions. Dan continued to perform under his own name around the UK, Holland, Belgium, Sweden and Canada. Mr Bennett also continued to perform around Europe,Canada and the U.S.A. Summer 1994 found Mr Bennett and Dan Donovan sharing one of their rare moments together. In a small English town in the heart of the mysterious Fenlands, now home to Dan, the two characters sipped port, smoked tobacco and told each other stories of angels... strange things did happen. Only now after more than a decade of friendship, the musical bards decided it was time to record some of their mutual musings. This session cost twenty pounds and yielded what was to become "Swamp Cranks", the first ever recordings. Performances followed sporadically. They would meet ...
