A WIZARD, A TRUE STAR is not the most humble album title ever, and the album fits it. In the tradition of sprawling pop messes like the Beatles' WHITE ALBUM or Game Theory's LOLITA NATION, a large part of this album's considerable charm is in its "throw it against the wall and see what sticks" construction.
After three albums with Philadelphia's psych-pop Nazz and an equal number of exquisitely crafted AM-pop solo records, Rundgren felt the need to stretch. So side one of A WIZARD, A TRUE STAR consists of 12 ultra-brief song fragments and burbling synth solos. From the giggly "Rock and Roll Pussy" to the genuinely experimental finale "La Feel Internationale," variety is the watchword. Side two is only slightly more structured, with a 10-minute medley of '60s R&B hits dominating. Weird but often fascinating.
Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Ken Perry (K-Disc).
Principally recorded at Secret Sound, New York.

What can I say?!? Along with Something/Anything, Todd was on a roll. Did a lot of cramming to this album when I was in college, partied a lot to it too. Will be partying a lot to it again.

The gift on a christmas Tree
The first masterpiece of Todd Rundgren. A crazy journey through the mind of an artist so immense and common at same time...Saxophones, synthesizers,snaked drums, guide us in a Fellini's cauldron.Psychedelic luna-park . I remeber that day when i found A wizard a true star...In fron of me a fantastic a multi-colored Christmas tree. A wizard a true star was my gift for that year and for the future

Todd intertwined almost all the tracks. When i first heard this CD I was imediatly in a trance. I had to keep listening till the end when he had the masterpieace of "Just One Victory".

The weird part about the hard rock scene in the late '80s and early '90s was that despite its overwhelming popularity, many of the bands had very limited singers. These bands protected their singers well, but when the well ran dry and they were forced to move on, many of these musicians found themselves out of their element. It wasn't that they were bad singers, they just needed that specific environment around their voice to be effective. It seems as though many of these singers found their way onto A Tribute to Journey, another one of the many tribute albums filled with hard rock musicians from that era performing in big super group jams. The band itself is made up of members of Warrant and Bang Tango, with each track featuring a different singer. Because of Journey frontman Steve Perry's original vocals, these tracks require a very powerful voice to carry them along. Kelly Hansen (of Hurricane) is the first to sing, and his rendition of "Seperate Ways" is a winner that sounds almost identical to the original. Alex Mitchell of Circus of Power is next to step into the magnifying glass that is this album, and he is the first to find himself miles away from his own talents. His awful rendition of "Any Way You Want It" is not helped by the band at all, sounding like Rammstein if they attempted to cover this song. Marq Torien (of Bullet Boys) and Eric Dover (of Imperial Drag) ...
