After achieving commercial success with the pop masterpiece SOMETHING/ANYTHING?, Todd Rundgren moved in a willfully experimental direction, a move that alienated some of his early fans. The culmination of this exploratory period in Rundgren's career was the formation of Utopia, originally a six-person band featuring an astounding three keyboardists.
TODD RUNDGREN'S UTOPIA, the band's debut, is mid-'70s progressive rock in every sense, from the tricky, fusionesque keyboard solos to the extended compositions--"The Ikon" is a staggering 30 minutes long--to the sometimes oblique and ponderous lyrical preoccupations. Nevertheless, it's better than Emerson Lake and Palmer roughly to the extent that the Beatles are better than Herman's Hermits. Rundgren's songwriting talents are in full force, and even the longest pieces have a fully composed feeling that makes this much more satisfying than the aimless noodling of many prog groups. Not for pop fans, perhaps, but excellent.
Utopia: Todd Rundgren (vocals, guitar); John Siegler (cello, bass); Moogy Klingman, Ralph Schuckett (keyboards); M. Frog Labat (synthesizer); John Wilcox (drums); Kevin Ellman (percussion). Todd Rundgren's Utopia album
$5.95 Todd Rundgren's first solo album after the breakup of his '60s band the Nazz originally didn't even feature his name on the cover; despite Rundgren being the only person pictured on the sleeve, it was treated as the self-titled debut of the "band" Runt. (This also explains the confusing title of the second Runt/Rundgren album, RUNT: THE BALLAD OF TODD RUNDGREN.)
RUNT contains at least two spectacular songs, the soulful piano-rock hit "We Gotta Get You a Woman" and the snide pop-rocker "I'm in the Clique," along with the choogling opener "Broke Down and Busted"--featuring members of the Band, who shared management with Rundgren--and the first ...
| | Todd Rundgren Wizard, A True Star CD (1973)
Todd Rundgren's Utopia CD music
$8.39 A WIZARD, A TRUE STAR is not the most humble album title ever, and the album fits it. In the tradition of sprawling pop messes like the Beatles' WHITE ALBUM or Game Theory's LOLITA NATION, a large part of this album's considerable charm is in its "throw it against the wall and see what sticks" construction.
After three albums with Philadelphia's psych-pop Nazz and an equal number of exquisitely crafted AM-pop solo records, Rundgren felt the need to stretch. So side ...
| | Todd Rundgren Faithful CD (1976)
Todd Rundgren's Utopia music CDs
$7.59 The second half of this set is made up of Rundgren originals in the style of the preceding batch of covers. (Think of the Rutles, though this pre-dates that loving parody.) Rundgren and the members of his fusion-oriented side project Utopia pull the feat off beautifully. The covers are perfect, and the originals include two of his best tunes, "The Verb 'To Love'" and "Love of the Common Man." ...
| | Utopia Ra CD (1977)
Todd Rundgren's Utopia songs
$9.09 Ra was the Egyptian god of the sun as worshipped by Akhnaten. Your prog-rock warning bell should be going off right now, but if you're expecting some Emerson Lake and Palmer meets Spinal Tap travesty, rest easy. RA is definitely one of the most progressive albums by Todd Rundgren and Utopia, but it's also a surprisingly tuneful, meaty album not really that far removed from Rundgren's earlier pop records.
Utopia's new, slimmed-down lineup of Rundgren, Roger Powell, Kasim Sultan, and Willie Wilcox (a lineup that would remain intact for a decade) is a musically tight but never boringly ...
| | Todd Rundgren Something/Anything? CDs (1972)
Todd Rundgren's Utopia album
$9.95 Classics like the enormous hit "I Saw the Light" and the power-pop mainstay "Couldn't I Just Tell You" abound, alongside odder tracks like the homage "Wolfman Jack" and "Song of the Viking." Side four is a loose studio jam with a small army of pals, featuring the magnificent "Hello It's Me" alongside much goofier material like "Some Folks Is Even Whiter Than Me." Rundgren would often succumb to his indulgent tendencies in some of his later '70s efforts, yet SOMETHING/ANYTHING? perfectly balances his unique sense of experimentation with his impeccable grasp of song and production craft. Though he made many fine musical statements, this remains Rundgren's pop music masterpiece.
One of the best albums of the '70s, Todd Rundgren's third solo project is a sprawling two-disc masterpiece that smartly avoids the self-indulgence that occasionally marred his later records. Rundgren recorded the first three sides of this album by himself, yet ...
| | Todd Rundgren Todd CD (1974)
Todd Rundgren's Utopia CD music
$7.59 Keyboards dominate the arrangements, with Rundgren, longtime cohort Mark "Moogy" Klingman, and session-man Ralph Schuckett all contributing piano, organ, and vintage '70s-style clavinet. The songs themselves are quirkier and more exploratory than earlier efforts, with the progressive and fusion influences that would dominate Rundgren's forthcoming band Utopia rearing their heads. Yet, at its best, TODD still comes across as a pop album, with soulful gems like "I Think You Know" and snarling rockers like "Heavy Metal Kids" predominating. Listeners looking for more ear-pleasing pop on the order of SOMETHING/ANYTHING? may be surprised by the musical tangents here, but fans of early '70s prog and experimental pop will find much to appreciate.
1974's TODD was a departure ...

| | In Flames Lunar Strain CD (1994) Japan; Reissue
Todd Rundgren's Utopia CD music
$34.29 Just about any genre or style of music has had skillful crossover artists who managed to win won over some nonbelievers. Grover Washington, Jr.'s tasteful jazz-funk reached a lot of people who hadn't necessarily developed a taste for the straight-ahead bop of Clifford Brown and Sonny Stitt; Willie Nelson's country-pop reached a lot of listeners who weren't necessarily into the hardcore honky tonk of Buck Owens and Lefty Frizzell. And in the metal world, In Flames has served as a bridge between the death metal/black metal underground and the more melodic power metal of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Queensr˙che. Originally released in Europe in 1994, In Flames' debut album, Lunar Strain, attracted an interesting mixture of death metal/black metal, power metal, and thrash metal enthusiasts. Like the early releases of At the Gates, Lunar Strain helped write the book on what came to be known as "melodic death metal" -- an approach that combines death metal elements (extreme vocals, blastbeats) with the type of intricacy, musicality, and craftsmanship one ...
