| | Todd Rundgren Initiation CD Todd Rundgren Discography of CDs
(4 Customer Reviews)
Personnel: Todd Rundgren (vocals, guitar, sitar, piano, keyboards, synthesizer, percussion); Rick Derringer (guitar, bass); Bob Rose (guitar); Dave Sanborn, Edgar Winter (saxophone); Roger Powell (nose flute, synthesizer); Moogy Klingman (organ); Ralph Schuckett (clavinet); John Siegler, Dan Hartman (bass); Kevin Ellman, John Wilcox, Roy Markowitz, Bernard Purdie, Rick Marotta, Chris Parker, Barry Lazarowitz (drums); Barbara Burton, Lee Pastora (percussion). Returning to solo recording almost immediately after forming Utopia, Todd Rundgren continued with the synth-heavy prog rock he pioneered with Todd Rundgren's Utopia on Initiation. The differences immediately resonate with "Real Man," a terrific song that encapsulates not only his newfound fondness for electronics, but also his burgeoning spirituality and his knack for pop craft. "Real Man" is so good, it's tempting to believe that the remainder of Initiation will follow in the same direction, resulting in an inspired, truly progressive fusion of classic Rundgren and synthesizers. As soon as the second track, an a cappella vocoder opus called "Born to Synthesize," it's clear that Rundgren has no intention of following that path, choosing to push the limits of synth technology and recorded music instead of constructing an album. Initiation suffers accordingly. At times, particularly on the first, song-oriented side, it is pretty intriguing, but too often, the results are simply frustrating because it doesn't go anywhere. That's particularly true with "A Treatise on Cosmic Fire," a half-hour "suite" that comprises all of side two and doesn't really go anywhere, despite hitting many stops along the way. It's enough to erase the memory of "Real Man," "Eastern Intrigue" and "Initiation," the moments where it all comes together on the first half of the record, but another spin of the first side reveals that Rundgren could have made Initiation something special if he had the discipline. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine INITIATION took a lot of notice when it was first released in 1975, because of its technical oddity: at 68 minutes, it was and remains the longest single-disc-vinyl pop album ever, longer than some two-LP sets. Over half of that length is taken up by the 36-minute exploration "A Treatise on Cosmic Fire." Bookended by pyrotechnic guitar solos, most of the piece consists of a lengthy synthesizer solo that actually sounds like a lot of the electronica acts that appeared two decades later. The other half of the album contains a pair of Rundgren's trademark pop-soul gems, "Real Man" and the title track; the SMILE-era Beach Boys homage "Eastern Intrigue," which foreshadows the genre exercises of Rundgren's next album, FAITHFUL; and an odd layered-vocals experiment called "Born to Synthesize." INITIATION is the first taste of the restless stylistic exploration that dominates the rest of Rundgren's career. Overlooked Masterpiece It's just plain & simple, this is one of those records you just "get" or "don't get"! Funny how Todd comically pokes fun at "real" rockers that don't get his synthesized noise. Being a musician and studio owner, it amazes me how this thing still holds up after a quarter of a century. This is "the" record that made me stand up and pay close attention to anuything this guy releases, whether you like it or not, it is always interesting and humourous. To view this as mechanized or lacking emotion is not understanding the complexites of music. To even compare it to Lou Reed's machine noise is ludicrous. It's like comparing the sandy white beaches and clear water of Tahiti to Mississippi mud and muck of the delta below New Orleans. They are both earth & water but as different as night & day. This is a brilliant album, start to finish, check it out, hopefully, you'll "get it". Submitted by Mark (Charlotte NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An oft-overlooked Todd MASTERPIECE Initiation is easily one of Todd Rundgren's greatest musical accomplishments of all time. It's sad that such a beautiful musical statement is so often overlooked or bashed by impatient/ignorant listeners. Everything on this album (including Treatise on Cosmic Fire) is brilliantly written, flawlessly arranged and performed, and immaculately produced. From the synth pop-soul of "Real Man" to melodic rock (Death of Rock n' Roll) to lush ballads (Fair Warning), it's all covered here, and Todd was at the top of his game throughout. Don't pay heed to the negative reviews here! Buy this album pronto!! Submitted by Jesse (Westland, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Half OK - Half Unlistenable The thing to remember about experimentation, particularly in music, is that sometimes the experiement goes bad...don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE Todd-Head - but "Initiation" is annoying - big on technical show but too incohesive and self indulgent to really be enjoyed as an "album".
Although the computer programming is impressive for being ahead of it's time on "Treatise..." ; it's also indicative of a cold machine-like indifference that only leaves one wondering why they are listening to it in the first place.(re: Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music)
Although "Initiation" contains a few well known Todd standards, it still seems as though a different album should have been made with these tracks along side the second half of "Faithful" instead. What we have here is a shizophrenic menagerie that continues on that subsequent release. "Initiation" is not for the casual Todd listener, and one indeed has to be intiated in order to endure it. | | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Initiation
$14.49 Photographer: Ben Watts. Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning touch. And just as "Home" worked to showcase Bublé's own writing abilities, here we get the sunshine pop of "Haven't Met You Yet" -- a skippy, jaunty little song that brings to mind a mix of the Carpenters and Chicago. Throw in a rollicking and soulful duet with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings on "Baby (You've Got ...
| | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Initiation
$12.85 Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica, electric piano); Robert Joyce, Walt Harrah, Randy Crenshaw, Abby DeWald, Amanda Barrett (vocals); David Hidalgo (guitar, mandolin, violin, accordion); Phil Upchurch (guitar); Donnie Herron (steel guitar, mandolin, violin, trumpet); Patrick Warren (piano, celesta, organ); George Recile (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: David Bianco. After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as ...

| | Carole King Her Greatest Hits: Songs Of Long Ago CD (1978) Remastered
Initiation
$7.15 This 1999 reissue contains two bonus tracks previously issued on THE CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT (EK 64942). Personnel includes: Carole King (vocals, piano, keyboards); James Taylor (acoustic guitar); Danny Kortchmar (guitar, congas); Dean Parks, David T. Walker (guitar); Curtis Amy (flute, soprano & baritone saxophones); Ernie Watts, Tom Scott (tenor saxophone); Chuck Findley (trumpet); Oscar Brasher (flugelhorn); George Bohannon (trombone, euphonium); Charlie Loper, Dick Hyde (trombone); Ralph Schuckett (electric piano); Charles Larkey, Lee Sklar (bass); Russ Kunkel, Joel O'Brien, Harvey Mason, Andy Newmark (drums); Teresa Calderon (congas); Ralph MacDonald, Bobbye Hall (percussion); Merry Clayton, Julia Tillman (background vocals). Originally released on Ode (JE 34967) and Epic (EK 64942). Includes liner notes by Graham Nash. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). This album was always sort of a joke among Carole King's serious fans, containing 12 songs drawn from six albums, and liner notes that fail even to acknowledge the existence of Writer, her one pre-Tapestry solo LP. A Natural Woman supplanted it later, and the addition of two live cuts, "Eventually" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" from the Carnegie Hall concert on the 1999 reissue (Ode/Epic/Legacy 65846), doesn't extended the range or depth of the selection sufficiently. On the other hand, the 1999 remastering does improve the listening pleasure inherent in what is here -- the material off of Tapestry, Music, Rhymes & Reasons, and others is now very robust, with vivid instrumentation and a close, rich profile of King's voice. The selection of King's work is still only an inch deep, but it's a more rewarding ...

Initiation
$27.19 German language version of the German electronic/techno icon's landmark 1975 album featuring 12 tracks. EMI. 1997.
German version of Kraftwerk's RADIO ACTIVITY. Personnel: Florian Schneider, Ralf Hütter (vocals, keyboards, drums, electronics); Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flür (percussion, electronic percussion). Unknown Contributor Role: Florian Schneider. A concept album exploring themes of broadcast communications, Radio-Activity marked Kraftwerk's return to more obtuse territory, extensively utilizing static, oscillators, and even Cage-like moments of silence to approximate the sense of radio transmission; a pivotal record in the group's continuing development, the title track -- the first they ever recorded in English -- is their most fully realized electro-pop effort to date, while "The Voice of Energy" precipitates the robot ...
