Personnel: Todd Rundgren (vocals, guitar); Roger Powell (keyboards, synthesizer); John Siegler (bass); John Wilcox (drums, percussion). Todd Rundgren considered 1966 the beginning of his professional musical career, largely because the Nazz formed around that time. As a celebration, he recorded Faithful. Presumably, Faithful celebrates the past and the future by juxtaposing a side of original pop material with a side of covers. Actually, "covers" isn't accurate -- the six oldies that comprise the entirety of side one are re-creations, with Rundgren "faithfully" replicating the sound and feel of the Yardbirds ("Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"), Bob Dylan ("Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine"), Jimi Hendrix ("If Six Was Nine"), the Beach Boys ("Good Vibrations") and the Beatles "("Rain," "Strawberry Fields Forever"). All of this is entertaining, to a certain extent, especially since it's remarkable how close Rundgren comes to duplicating the very feel of the originals. Still, it's hard to see it as much more than a flamboyant throwaway, especially when compared with the glorious second side. For the first time since Something/Anything?, Rundgren allows himself to write and -- more importantly -- record straight-ahead pop songs. Certainly, A Wizard, A True Star, Todd and Initiation had their share of great songs, but they weren't delivered as pop songs; they were telegraphed as art. Here, Rundgren delivers pop and rock songs with ease, letting the melodies glide to the forefront. There are embellishments, of course, but the end result is a lushness that's apparent even on the hard rockers. If Rundgren had made all of Faithful originals, it would have been a pure pop masterpiece. As it stands, it's essential for the faithful -- not only for hardcore Toddheads, but for devoted pop fans as well. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The first half of FAITHFUL consists of dead-on, note-perfect recreations of six classic '60s pop tunes: the Yardbirds' freakout "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago," the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations," the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Rain," Bob Dylan's "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)," and Jimi Hendrix's dreamy "If Six Was Nine." The second half of this set is made up of Rundgren originals in the style of the preceding batch of covers. (Think of the Rutles, though this pre-dates that loving parody.) Rundgren and the members of his fusion-oriented side project Utopia pull the feat off beautifully. The covers are perfect, and the originals include two of his best tunes, "The Verb 'To Love'" and "Love of the Common Man." Falling for this set depends on whether one thinks this conceit is worthwhile. Todd Rundgren Faithful Songs Purchase Faithful CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Todd Rundgren Runt CD (1970)
Faithful
$5.95 Personnel: Todd Rundgren (vocals, various instruments); Don Lee Van Winkle (guitar); Mark Klingman (piano); Tony Sales (bass, percussion); Rick Danko, John Miller, Don Ferris (bass); Hunt Sales (drums, percussion); Levon Helm, Bobby Moses, Mickey Brook (drums). Recorded at I.D. Sound Studio in Los Angeles, California and the Record Plant, New York, New York. Reluctant to start a full-fledged solo career after leaving the Nazz, Todd Rundgren formed Runt, a band that was a front for what was in effect a solo project. Such isolationism lends Runt its unique atmosphere -- it is the insular work of a fiercely talented artist finally given the opportunity to pursue his off-kilter musical vision. From the ...
| | Todd Rundgren Wizard, A True Star CD (1973)
Faithful
$8.39 Personnel includes: Todd Rundgren, Mark Klingman, John Siegler, Ralph Shockett, Tom Cosgrove, "Buffalo" Bill Gelber. Principally recorded at Secret Sound, New York. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Ken Perry (K-Disc). Something/Anything? proved that Todd Rundgren could write a pop classic as gracefully as any of his peers, but buried beneath the surface were signs that he would never be satisfied as merely a pop singer/songwriter. A close listen to the album reveals the eccentricities and restless spirit that surges to the forefront on its follow-up, A Wizard, a True Star. Anyone expecting the third record of Something/Anything?, filled with variations on "I Saw the Light" and "Hello It's Me," will be shocked by A Wizard. As much a mind-f*ck as an album, A Wizard, a True Star rarely breaks down to full-fledged songs, ...

Faithful
$6.45 Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar, dobro); Eric Clapton; Yvonne Elliman (vocals, guitar, background vocals); Carl Radle (bass guitar); Al Jackson, Al Jackson, Jr. (drums); Thomas Bernfeld (background vocals); Tom Bernfield (vocals, background vocals); George Terry (guitar, piano, background vocals); Albhy Galuten (piano, electric piano, clavichord, organ, synthesizer); Dick Sims (organ, keyboards); Jamie Oldaker (drums, percussion); Jim Fox (drums). Audio Remasterer: Joseph M. Palmaccio. Recording information: Criteria Recording Studios, Miami, FL (04/1974-05/1974). Photographer: David Gahr. Arrangers: Eric Clapton; Carl Radie. 461 Ocean Boulevard is Eric Clapton's second studio solo album, arriving after his side project of Derek and the Dominos and a long struggle with heroin addiction. Although there are some new reggae influences, the album doesn't sound all that different from the rock, pop, blues, country, and R&B amalgam of Eric Clapton. However, 461 Ocean Boulevard is a tighter, more focused outing that enables Clapton to stretch out instrumentally. Furthermore, the pop concessions on the album -- the sleek production, the concise running times -- don't detract from the rootsy origins of the material, whether it's Johnny Otis' "Willie and the Hand Jive," the traditional blues "Motherless Children," ...
| | Eagles CD (1972)
Faithful
$15.65 Eagles: Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon (vocals, guitar); Randy Meisner (vocals, bass instrument); Don Henley (vocals, drums). Balance is the key element of the Eagles' self-titled debut album, a collection that contains elements of rock & roll, folk, and country, overlaid by vocal harmonies alternately suggestive of doo wop, the Beach Boys, and the Everly Brothers. If the group kicks up its heels on rockers like "Chug All Night," "Nightingale," and "Tryin'," it is equally convincing on ballads like "Most of Us Are Sad" and "Train Leaves Here This Morning." The album is also balanced among its members, who trade off on lead vocal chores and divide the songwriting such that Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner all get three writing or co-writing credits. (Fourth member Don Henley, with only one co-writing credit and two lead vocals, falls a little behind, while Jackson Browne, Gene Clark, and Jack Tempchin also figure in the writing credits.) The album's overall balance is worth keeping in mind because it produced three Top 40 hit singles (all of which turned up on the massively popular Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975) that do not reflect that balance. "Take It Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" are similar-sounding mid-tempo folk-rock tunes sung by Frey that express the same sort of laid-back philosophy, as indicated by the word "easy" in both titles, while "Witchy Woman," a Henley vocal and co-composition, initiates the band's career-long examination of supernaturally evil females. These are the songs one remembers from Eagles, and they look forward to the eventual dominance of the band by Frey and Henley. But the complete album from which they come belongs as much to Leadon's country-steeped playing and singing and to Meisner's melodic rock & roll feel, which, on the release date, made it seem ...
