Breaking away from Savoy Brown to form this band, the members of Foghat knew from the start what sort of record they wanted to make. With heavy emphasis on the hard boogie, Foghat got down to work with the help of Dave Edmunds and crafted a hard rock gem. Covering Chuck Berry's "Maybellene," they goosed the beat up until it was almost a precursor of the heavy metal yet to come.  good rock n roll
this album came out in 1972 this was the first album from the group a great introduction followed by other great albums including slow ride. really good rock n roll but a sound all there own very good highly recommend this one and number two

 Pick of the litter!
Fresh from Savoy Brown lonesome Dave is wonderful. Total creative freedom he rocks and rocks and blues and blues you away. One of my alltime favorites is Foghats 1st. A glimpse of what was to become a really hard rockin outfit. Sit back and enjoy.

The whole cd is top-notch rock n roll from the git-go. Foghat's version of Chuck Berry's "Maybelline" is nothing more than sheer genius arranging at it's best. Undoubtedly or undoutably (your choice, yuk yuk) the fastest version ever recorded. I like 'Ol Chuck a lot, but I gotta say this, Mr. Berry, eat your heart out sir.
To have seen them live was a very fortunate thing for me and thousands of Foghat's fans all over the world. They always kept the melody of the song there and making it available for them to stretch out with their own sound and improvise within the tune itself.
Long may the original Foghat four's sound be heard. It was a pure basic chemistry. Emphasis on chemistry. Get This cd ASAP and turn it up to (as Spinal Tap puts it) "Eleven". Adios

F.M. Cornog returns with his eagerly awaited second LP after the appreciative murmurs caused by his debut, Shining Hours in a Can (the British Goodbye California, plus all his stellar early 7" songs as additional tracks). Reviews that attempted to lump the uniquely talented Cornog in with some sort of "lo-fi" revolution, with such bands as Guided by Voices and Sebadoh -- since Cornog contents himself with recording 8-track in his home -- are misguided and laughable. For while those groups -- ERP is a person -- record haphazard, sporadic bursts of whatever tunes come into their heads, Cornog is busy multi-tracking undefiled recordings of his simple, neo-spiritual arrangements -- he's more Pet Sounds than The White Album. Poor Fricky in particular puts some distance between him and those other 24-track/mega-studio-eschewing-folks. Its 13 burbling tracks are more in the vein of Shining Hours' "Make a Deal with the City" (too bad nothing here is as nasty or as nerve-racking as "Psychic Whore" or "Helmet On," but that's OK), with a supremely prickling ambiance in his simple, only-slightly distorted, dreamy guitar signatures. ...
