One of the foremost doo-wop groups of the late1950s and early '60s, Little Anthony & the Imperials enjoyed a succession of hits with classic rock & roll era songs like "Tears on My Pillow," "Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop," and "So Much," all of which combined lead singer Anthony Gourdine's distinctive falsetto vocals with the group's sophisticated harmony backing. This best-of pairs these early hits with Gourdine's second incarnation of the Imperials, which performs a haunting version of "Going Out of My Head," as well as the romantic "I Miss You So." Rhino's Best of Little Anthony & the Imperials remains one of the best collections of the group's work, spanning their tear-stained doo wop as well as their later forays into pop and soul. Along with gathering the highlights of these styles, such as "Tears on My Pillow," "Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop," "Goin' Out of My Head," and "Hurts So Bad," the album also includes 14 other notable tracks. Songs like "Two People in the World," "Diary," "So Much," and "Wishful Thinking" aren't as distinctive as the group's doo wop hits, although "A Prayer and a Jukebox" distinguishes itself with a cool, gospel-inspired organ. The wittily-named "Taking a Vacation From Love" and "I'm Alright," along with some of the other upbeat tracks, explore the more soulful direction Little Anthony & the Imperials took on their later, more successful singles. "I'm on the Outside (Lookin' In)" is a beautiful balance of their lovelorn roots and the soulful leanings of their later work, and sounds almost like a test run for the success they would have with "Goin' Out of My Head" and "Hurts So Bad." 1965's intimate "Take Me Back" and theatrical "I Miss You So" close out the collection, reflecting the directions their later work would take. 25 Greatest Hits may be the most complete single-disc look at the group's music at this point, but Best of Little Anthony & the Imperials is still a solid collection of most of their greatest moments. ~ Heather Phares

| | Vic Latino Ultra Dance 06 CDs (2005)
Best Of Little Anthony & The Imperials
$16.89 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Vic Latino and The Riddler. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. DJs: Vic Latino; Riddler. The sixth Ultra Dance compilation from the model-lovin' Ultra label (so is this how all those jockish former schoolyard bullies get into dance music?) is split between Vic Latino and the Riddler, who present a set steeped in progressive house (with just a twinge of trance). As usual for the series, the emphasis is on the tracks, not the mixing skills, so each selection gets laid out for a few minutes before exiting. The blends between tracks are subtle, lasting a few seconds in most cases, and are rarely jarring. Notable inclusions come from Soul Central (their ...

Best Of Little Anthony & The Imperials
$9.79 U.K. import contains the exclusive bonus cut "Should I." CD contains 1 bonus track. Personnel: Carl Sturken (guitar, piano, keyboards, programming); Uri Vodoz, Elizabeth Nielson, Cenovia Cummins, Jan Mullen (violin); Sue Pray, Vince Lionti (viola); Richard Locker (cello); Rudy Maya (drum programming); Full Force (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Jason Groucott; Al Hemberger; Vada Nobles. Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY; The Loft, Bronxville, NY. Photographers: Mark Mann; Tai Linzie. Arrangers: Jay Brown; Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith; Full Force. Given the proliferation of young and beautiful urban dance-pop divas dominating the radio and music video airwaves in 2005, it initially was tempting to discount Rihanna as yet another Beyoncé-Ciara-Ashanti cash-in. But like her Def Jam labelmate Teairra Mari -- another young and beautiful urban dance-pop diva who emerged out of nowhere in 2005 -- Rihanna is winsome rather than wannabe, thanks in no small part to her producers. Just as Teairra Mari benefited greatly from irresistibly shrewd beat-making on her debut album, Rihanna benefits from the knowing production work of Syndicated Rhythm Productions, aka Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, who together produced a laundry list of contemporary teen pop sensations during the prior decade. What these guys do that's so irresistibly shrewd is synthesize Caribbean rhythms and beats with standard-issue urban dance-pop: Caribbean-inflected urban, if you will. So while a song like "Pon de Replay" -- to pick the most obvious exhibit -- is driven by booming dancehall-lite ...
