Everything you love about legendary Californian punkers the Circle Jerks is gloriously displayed on Golden Shower of Hits. Obnoxious humor (Keith Morris' vocals, the album cover), disjointed guitars courtesy of Greg Hetson, and sloppy yet excited rhythm work (bassist Roger Rogerson and drummer John Ingram) all add up to perhaps the ultimate punk rock party. The band never excelled in subtlety, as evidenced in the song titles "When the Shit Hits the Fan" and "Parade of the Horribles," but the Jerks were one of the first bands to play lightning fast, yet still memorable punk (the 41-second classic "In Your Eyes"). Included is Golden Shower's title track medley, which upset longtime fans for the covers (albeit very tongue-in-cheek) of such middle-of-the-road schlock as "Close to You," "Afternoon Delight," and "Love Will Keep Us Together." But all the faves are here -- "Under the Gun," "Bad Words," "Coup d'Etat," and "Product of My Environment," among a host of others. Golden Shower of Hits is the ultimate introduction to this one-of-a-kind band. ~ Greg Prato

Golden Shower Of Hits
$10.65 The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene began with Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age angst and indignation. The songs rage against bullies, religious hypocrisy, and the herd mentality.
Other songs, taken from later in Minor Threat's career, feature tighter and more sophisticated playing. Metallic flourishes tinge the guitar work, vocal harmonies ...
| | Skatenigs Stupid People Shouldn't Breed CD (1992)
Golden Shower Of Hits
$9.79 A strange album, this one -- or maybe not so strange in light of the future, but still odd. Whatever bandleader Phil Owen was on at the time, it helped in creating an album that in its own way almost predicted nu metal, though without that particular compressed explosion Ross Robinson brought on the production front to Korn and Limp Bizkit. Instead, it's an uncredited Al Jourgensen effort that, with the occasional samples and general noise level, is pretty well in keeping with his contemporaneous Ministry and particularly Revolting Cocks work, though without the chaotic level of detail expected from those bands. Songs like the catchy enough riffing of "Chemical Imbalance" are more straight-ahead charges that aren't industrial rock, per se, and the trebly sound on "Shit Authority" suggest demos only slightly ...
| | Circle Jerks Group Sex CD (1980)
Golden Shower Of Hits
$9.25 Principally recorded at Byrdcliffe Studios, Culver City, California.
On GROUP SEX, the Circle Jerks' second full-length album, the band makes no great changes in its musical style. On the other hand, there really was no need for revision. Keith Morris (also an early vocalist for Black Flag) and his band mates had pretty much hit the nail on the head the first time out (WILD IN THE STREETS, appended to GROUP on some CD editions). The Jerks play the sort of very fast and very snotty punk rock--complete with thin, weedy vocals--that eventually became all the rage with such chart-topping bands as Green Day, the Offspring, and No Doubt.
As their name and the album title would suggest, the Circle Jerks are not a subtle band. "I Just Want Some Skank" and "World Up My Ass" stand as further examples of their in-your-face lewdness. Standout numbers include "Beverly Hills," an extremely pointed attack on the "upper class," and "Paid Vacation," an anti-military song built on Greg Hetson's buzz-saw guitar. ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Golden Shower Of Hits
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the ...
| | M Arnold Bahama CD (2001) (Import)
Golden Shower Of Hits
$14.45 Symphonic, melodic, and hypnotic, it takes precisely 33 seconds into the opening cut, "Climb," for Arnold's symptomatic Wall of Sound to wash ashore in a wave that would lull Brian Wilson out of bed. Confidently withdrawn into a melancholy world of their own, the triumvirate of Mark Saxby, Phil Payne, and Phil Morris have created a somnambulistic collection of low-key pleasantries which synthesize bits and pieces of psychedelia, folk, Baroque pop, and Brill Building ...

| | Barclay James Harvest Face To Face CD (1992) (Import) Import; Remastered; United Kingdom
Golden Shower Of Hits
$15.75 Progressive rockers Barclay James Harvest continued to craft conceptual epics on their 1992 album, FACE TO FACE.
It's not impossible for an old progressive rock band to make an honorable transition into '80s pop. Yes, Genesis, and the Moody Blues all pulled it off, though with varying degrees of artistic success. But when a once-intelligent band has three song titles on one side featuring the word "Love," you know they're just phoning it in. "Panic" might be the worst track ever recorded by BJH, although to be fair it works wonderfully as an unintentional parody of hair metal. The closing track, "Guitar Blues," retains some slight spark of creative musicianship, but this album can only be recommended if you like hackneyed DX-7 patches and the acrid smell of wasted talent. ~ Paul Collins
