Carmen achieved far greater success with his debut solo album than he ever had with his old group, The Raspberries. In part this was because, freed from the restrictions of leading a rock band, he could indulge his taste in big, lush ballads. received this as vinyl on its release in 1975 because I forgot to tick a box in a music club order form. one of my best ever mistakes, fabulous music, still sounds good to me in 2008.

The first album as a solo artist is by far the best. Some of the music reminded me of the old Raspberries music, Billy Joel style and Beatles style. Great to have for you collection. Every song is differenct.

This was orginally released in 1976, and I had totally forgot just how great it was. The music and words seem to just "melt" together. Albums of this caliber are a thing of the past.

They weren't kidding when they put "All-Star" in the subtitle, but the most satisfying thing about this big-name tribute to the late Luther Vandross is how many of these "All-Stars" let their guard down, expressing both genuine grief over the loss of R&B's most likeable fellows and jubilation over his music, which spoke to so many people, offered a rich blend of influences, and had a warm, soulful grace both in its writing and delivery. Mary J. Blige captures everyone's first encounter with the great "Never Too Much" with a bit of dialog before launching into one of her warmest, most elegant performances. The grief of Aretha Franklin on "A House Is Not a Home" is monolithic, while fellow diva Patti LaBelle hits every "I need you now" in "Here & Now" with touching despair, inferring loss over lyrics that deal with comfort and "always being there." Nonetheless, the newfangled Lynyrd Skynrd still know how to rip it up, as LYVE FROM STEEL TOWN makes amply clear. The band runs through new tunes and all the requisite favorites--including "Sweet Home Alabama," "Gimme Three Steps," and, of course, "Freebird"--for an audience as fired up as they are, making LYVE FROM STEEL TOWN a nice treat for die-hard Southern rock fans.
