AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados were quite receptive to first-rate material ranging from the invigorating "I'm the One" to the hauntingly romantic "A Love of Your Own." By zeroing in on their strengths -- hard-hitting funk and delightfully melodic soul -- AWB saw to it that Soul Searching was every bit as rewarding as its predecessors. ~ Alex Henderson Soul Searching Music | List Price | $8.96 (You save $1.37) | | Category | Rock Albums, R&B CDs, Rap, Soul/R&B, Rock/Pop, Funk | | Label | Rhino | | Orig Year | 1976 | | All Time Sales Rank | 10710 | | CD Universe Part number | 1117569 | | Catalog number | 71272 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jul 20, 1993 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Arif Mardin | | Engineer | Gene Paul; Jimmy Douglass; Bobby Warner | | Personnel | Steve Ferrone - drums, percussion Hamish Stuart - vocals, guitar, bass Alan Gorrie - vocals, guitar, background vocals Roger Ball - alto saxophone, keyboards Onnie McIntyre - guitar Malcolm "Molly" Duncan - tenor saxophone

Best kept secret of the 70's This is the soul music that defined the 1970's. The harmony mixed with rythem and blues makes this album one of the bands best. Definitely! Submitted by the_dove1 (Portland, OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Class Funk Pure vision, genius, top shelf, gargantuon grooves. This album sets the standard for sophistication and style in funk music.
I know of no one else who could do it.
A whole class above anyone else.
I doubt if anyone will ever breath the musical lust and sweat the cosmic grooves like the average White Band. This album is pure greased up orgasmic
locomotion. Submitted by a reviewer (Coogee ,Sydney Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
AWB - evolving A positive move away, but ahead, from the initial two releases. Less funky, but very well performed and produced. If you're a fan, you'll love it. Submitted by a reviewer (Huntsville, AL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
True soul music This had to have been one of the hottest albums of 1976. "A Love Of Your Own", "I'm The One" and "Love Your Life" stayed in heavy rotation in my house as a kid on Saturday mornings and family gatherings. I'll definitely buy this one again and spring it on my parents. Submitted by T.C. (Warrenton, Virginia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Soul Searching
$6.35 Though Gino Vannelli's third record didn't contain a big hit single like its predecessor, STORM AT SUNUP was a significant step forward artistically. Combining the Stevie Wonder-esque synth textures of POWERFUL PEOPLE with a complex jazz-rock fusion sound and vocal gymnastics occasionally reminiscent of Tim Buckley, the album finds Vannelli at his most musically ambitious. "Mama Coco" sounds like Weather Report jamming with Jamiroquai singer Jason Kay, while "Love is a Night" makes ELP-style keyboard rock sound like pure love-makin' music. By this point, Vannelli has pared away the often-bizarre edges of his sound and became more mainstream. That's not a bad thing. This album's predecessor, A Pauper in Paradise, seemed to blow up his pretensions to skyscraper ...
