| | Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 4: Soul CD (5 Customer Reviews)
While the material on volume four of Rhino's rock instrumentals set chronologically preceded what was on the third volume, no soul, R&B, or even soul-jazz and funk fan should mind these 18 genuine classics, including two superb numbers from Booker T. and the MGs, seminal tracks by the Mar-Keys, Bar-Kays, and Cannonball Adderley, and great Latin tunes from Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria. There's absolutely no fluff, and the presence on CD of rare cuts like the Young Holt Trio's "Wack Wack" and Alvin Cash & the Crawlers' "Twine Time" is most welcome. ~ Ron Wynn

| Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 4: Soul Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Took me back to the 60's & 70's !!! My all time favorite song to dance to is "The Horse" which is why I purchased this CD. I was amazed I could find this arrangement! And the rest of the songs----WOW------I just pretend I am a young woman again out dancing!! I love this CD!!! I am sure I will wear out the CD dancing to "The Horse"!!!!!!! YEAH, Baby!!!!! Could you imagine how many albums you would have to buy to get close to having a collection of FABULOUS Soul Instrumentals as what the people of Rhino Records put together here??? I own the Volume 3, Rock instrumental CD and plan to purchase the others because instrumentals are way too cool, man! But this "Soul" compilation is real choice, and I hope you enjoy it as well. Reviewing whole order The order that I received from CD Universe was fantastic. Everyone of the CDs came in pristine condition. The service was fast and I will be ordering all my music needs from your company. I have e-mailed your site to several of my friends.
Thanks again for the great service and music. Submitted by john.wooters3 (Marshall, Illinois) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Instrumental classics from the 60s Great arrangement of instrumental hits from the 60s. Soulful Strut is one of my favorites. It was played on the Juke Box in the club on Nha Trang Air Base when I was there in 1968. Submitted by a reviewer (Jackson, Ga) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
too much!! As a "child" of the 60's and 70's this albun is just fullll of funky, funky memories. However, if you're not from that generation but you have "soul" in your body, you're bound to like it. It's definitely not the tepid music they serve to us as "modern soul" today. A great compilation. Submitted by juneann (Balearic islands, Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Butch Helemano Reggae Soul CD (2003)
Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 4: Soul
$17.69 A leading light in the somewhat curious world of Hawaiian reggae, Butch Helemano is a smooth singer and a talented songwriter who sometimes errs just a bit too far on the side of slick production and whose lyrics sometimes come across as just a bit prefabricated, but even at his most banal, Helemano knows how to put his sunny grooves and effortlessly catchy melodies across. On Reggae Soul he spends most of his time in a sort of digital-roots mode, flirting with hip hop beats and sound effects on "You're the Only One" but keeping things dour and dread on the minor-key anthem "Roots and Culture." There's plenty of his signature lovers rock as well, as exemplified by the soulful "Love Me Now" and the nicely funky "Come Along." Less effective is the galloping ska of "It's Alright," which comes across as a weak tribute to the glory days of Studio One. He's not changing the face of reggae music, but you can always count on Butch Helemano ...
