King Kong lives Redbone were the founding fathers of funk. Back then it wasn't even called funk, like Santana's Latino inspired sound it was just another kind of rock which, based upon the track 'Prehistoric rhythm' from their first album, became known as the 'King Kong beat'. Without original drummer Pete 'Last Walking Bear' DePoe it now apparently takes a drummer and a percussionist to recreate the rhythm, but this album, recorded before illness prevented Lolly Vegas from performing any further, delivers it in full Kong-o-vision. The classics 'Witch Queen of New Orleans' and 'Come and get your love' (With its 'Hey now, hey now, what's the matter...' chorus as lifted by Cindy Lauper for her remake of 'Girls just wanna have fun') delivered here sound in many ways more funky and less poppy than the originals, and the new material doesn't sound particualrly out of place alongside them. If you're into 60s rock, the origins of funk, or even proto-disco you owe yourself a listen to this album.
Can I just add that, despite the location, I am not the previous reviewer and I have no idea who he or she is... But they have great taste. Submitted by gurney.mcgoohan (Oxford, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The forefathers of funk/rock. They still got it... Still featuring the songwriting half of the original band, this certainly sounds like an undubbed, completely live recording (Make that two live recordings), but I guess you should never take anything for granted...
This isn't a 'Greatest hits live' album by any stretch. It contains just enough of the original hits, reworked, to keep us happy, but also features a lot of new material, plus one of the 'bones legendary jams. If you like your music pristine pretty and digitally perfect then I'd hesitate to recommend this, but if, like me, you get off on hearing good music played by real human beings twanging and banging things, this is unmissable.
Come and get yo' love! Submitted by a reviewer (Oxford, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Curtis Mayfield Superfly: Deluxe 25th Anniversary Edition CDs (1972) Digipak
Redbone Live CD music
$13.45 With his socially conscious messages and positive, pro-active stance, Curtis Mayfield seemed an unlikely candidate to score a blaxploitation film. That SUPERFLY resulted not only in an excellent soundtrack for the film, but in one of Mayfield's best albums, is all the more surprising. In fact, Mayfield's forward-thinking philosophy added a layer of depth to the movie, painting its realistic urban scenes through song in ways that comment on socio-economic hardships and the plight of many African ...

| | Blue Oyster Cult Spectres CD (1977) Bonus Tracks
Redbone Live CD music
$7.59 Released during the year that punk broke, Blue Oyster Cult's sixth album was the important follow-up to the hugely successful AGENTS OF FORTUNE. SPECTRES found the group continuing to craft material that mated a trademark guitar-driven sound with intelligent lyrics. Although many short-sighted critics labeled the band heavy metal, this Long Island quintet was far more creative than this classification would suggest.
Although guitarists Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma dominate many of these songs with high-flying solos, the pristine harmonies of songs such as "Golden Age of Leather" and "Fireworks" are an often forgotten facet of Blue Oyster Cult's ...
| | Tommy Ladnier Goose Pimples CD (1999)
Redbone Live music CDs
$16.25 New Orleans-born trumpeter Tommy Ladnier is honored here with a chronologically stacked retrospective covering the years 1926-1939. While a few examples from his earlier work (1924-1925) with Jelly Roll Morton, Lovie Austin, and Sam Wooding would have been nice, the selections on Goose Pimples were obviously intended to showcase Ladnier's mature style, from the Fletcher Henderson sides of 1926 and 1927 through the rowdy New Orleans Feetwarmers session of 1932 and various 1938 recordings by both Ladnier's ...
