THE LAWS OF JAZZ recorded in New York on April 2 & 22, 1964. FLUTE BY-LAWS recorded on August 25 & September 13, 1965 and February 24, 1966. THE LAWS OF JAZZ originally released on Atlantic (1432). Flutist Hubert Laws began his solo career with two little-known LPs for Atlantic, of which this was the first. Joined by pianist Armando Corea (before he became known as Chick), bassist Richard Davis and either Jimmy Cobb or Bobby Thomas on drums, Laws is in fine form during what is essentially a straight-ahead jazz set. Some of the music is a little funky, but throughout, Laws (who plays piccolo on two of the seven numbers) is in excellent form. Highlights include "Miss Thing," "Bessie's Blues," and his own "Bembe Blue." Neither of the Atlantic sets have been reissued in full on CD yet. ~ Scott Yanow

This two-fer from Collectables features a pair of out-of-print LPs by jazz flutist Hubert Laws: The Laws of Jazz and Flute By-Laws, both were originally released on Atlantic in 1966. Among the 14 cuts are "Bessie's Blues," "Bloodshot," "No You'd Better Not," "Strange Girl" and "Baila Cinderella." These albums are worth acquiring for any fan of straight-ahead jazz. ~ Al Campbell
