Lee Oskar's solo career got off to an enjoyable start with this self-titled collection of pop-jazz and instrumental pop/R&B. From this point on, the Danish-born harmonica player had two careers, as a member of War and as a solo artist. It's a good thing that Oskar chose to remain in the highly successful War, for his instrumental solo albums were on the esoteric side and lacked War's commercial appeal. Not a huge seller, this album was a creative success more than a commercial one. The album gets off to an impressive start with the haunting "I Remember Home (A Peasant's Symphony)," and Oskar keeps the artistic momentum going with instrumentals that range from the congenial "Sunshine Keri" and the laid-back "BLT" to the funky "Down the Nile." Originally a vinyl LP, Lee Oskar was reissued on CD in 1995. ~ Alex Henderson

| Lee Oskar Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) First heard this album in 1978 When I lived in Ohio, my favorite radio station in the 70's, WOXR-Oxford, Ohio (now WOXY)used to play entire LP's on Sunday evening to feature new music & artists before they were generally played on Top 40 or Main Stream FM. I set up my Sony reel to reel deck and captured this LP by Lee Oskar. I transfered that to a cassette when I sold my reel deck & have since worn out the cassette tape; so I was pleasantly surprised to find this bit of work on CD. Great music for driving or kicking back at home. Submitted by gbrowning (Phoenix, Arizona) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Help with military life When I bought this album, I bought it because the cover looked cool, but when I started listen to it, it would send a calming influence through me,I esspecially enjoy Starkite, the lyrics helped me talk to the female types just like the Meastro (Barry White). Thank you Mr. Oskar.
I thank the LORD for the gifts HE has giving to people to bring forth such beautiful music. Submitted by Jose (Zion, IL,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Ahead of its time For harmonica lovers and jazz lovers alike, this album is a plus to your collection. Even thought this music was recorded in the late '70s, the percussion and guitar styles sound like something from the '90s and beyond. Its style is classic and its contents will stand the test of time. I enjoy listening to it over and over. Submitted by rsipes (Indianapolis, IN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Lee Oskar album
$9.89 The album that paved the way for War's commercial success, 1971's ALL DAY MUSIC is a laid-back slice of genuine California funk. Modeled on the aesthetic of musically and racially integrated bands Santana and Sly & the Family Stone, War knocked down many boundaries separating genres. Soul, rock, Latin, blues, and funk all make their way into the mix here, and while the group's later records would groove harder, there is a sunny mellowness to this album that evokes the palm trees and balmy breezes of the ensemble's native Los Angeles.
Because War was primarily a jam collective, their producer Jerry Goldstein hit upon a brilliant strategy on ALL DAY MUSIC by recording as the band played and developed ideas; he then edited those tapes down to something resembling pop song formats. This technique is in evidence on the title track, and on the hard-hitting "Slipping into Darkness," the band's first gold single. Elsewhere, "Get Down" showcases War's political side (the lyrics address police harassment and other issues), and "Nappy Head" finds the band in a heavy Latin vibe. Eclectic and thoroughly appealing, this disc is an excellent offering of early '70s funk.

| | Lee Oskar My Road Our Road CD (1980)
Lee Oskar CD music
$8.95 It came as no surprise when Avenue reissued most of War's '70s albums on CD in the '90s -- many of those albums had been gold and platinum sellers as LPs, and the market for reissues of classic soul and funk was a healthy one. But because Lee Oskar's solo albums of 1976-1980 were far from the huge sellers that War's albums were, it came as a pleasant surprise when Avenue started reissuing them on CD in the '90s. First released on vinyl in 1980 and reissued on CD in 1995, My Road, Our Road was Oskar's third solo album. The highlights of this mostly instrumental pop-jazz/R&B date include the mellow "Up All Night" and the good-natured "Song for My Son" as well as the evocative "My Road" and the moody "Our Road," which features jazz saxophonist Pat Rizzo as well as Brazilian jazz singer Flora Purim. It's safe to say that the vast majority of War fans didn't buy this album; however, it's an enjoyable outing that did receive some attention in the quiet storm market. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Lee Oskar Before The Rain CD (1978)
Lee Oskar music CDs
$9.65 Here's why all serious music lovers still need a turntable: there are so many worthwhile LPs from the '60s and '70s that will probably never be reissued on CD. Before Avenue Records came into the picture, it seemed unlikely that Lee Oskar's solo albums of 1976-1980 would ever be reissued on CD -- labels usually reissue titles they think there is a heavy demand for, and Oskar's solo efforts weren't the mega-blockbusters that War's albums were. But Avenue pleasantly surprised listeners in the '90s by making Oskar's solo output available on CD, including 1978's Before the Rain. Did this album outsell War classics like Why Can't We Be Friends? and All Day Music? Hardly. Reissued in 1995, this mostly instrumental album deserved to come back into print simply because it is good. From a commercial standpoint, the problem with Before the Rain is that it's difficult to categorize -- is it funk, pop-jazz, quiet storm, or fusion? Arguably, Before the Rain is all of those things, and Oskar's harmonica playing is expressive whether he is getting mildly funky on "Steppin'" or being mellow and laid-back on "More Than Words Can Say" and the title track. "Steppin'" certainly isn't typical of funk instrumentals; the tune opens with bagpipes -- not exactly an instrument that one ordinarily associates with funk. But then, Oskar is no stranger to multiculturalism; how many harmonica players who were born in Copenhagen, Denmark, went on to play with one of the top soul/funk bands of the '70s? Before the Rain may not have set the world on fire when it was first released ...

| | Best Of Lee Oskar CD (1992)
Lee Oskar album
$9.79 In the late '70s and early '80s, Lee Oskar recorded several decent solo albums while continuing to be a member of War. The harmonica player/composer was an integral part of War's sound, and his solo albums weren't a major departure from that band's more relaxed output. The thing Oskar lacked as a solo artist were major hit singles -- his albums tended to sound a lot like War's album tracks, and he never delivered a solo single that had the radio-friendly immediacy of "Why Can't We Be Friends," "All Day Music" or "Slipping into Darkness." Spanning 1976-1983, The Best of Lee Oskar isn't a collection of hit singles, but paints a likable picture of Oskar as an album-oriented artist. You won't find a lot of hard-driving funk à la "Galaxy" on this 1999 CD -- from vocal numbers like "San Francisco Bay" to instrumentals such as "More Than Words Can Say," "Before the Rain" and "Sunshine Keri," this collection emphasizes the laid-back and congenial. None of this material is well known, although Oskar's mellow inclinations earned him some attention in quiet storm circles. For War fans who overlooked Oskar's own albums, The Best of Lee Oskar wouldn't be a bad introduction to his solo output. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Guillermo Gregorio Otra Musica Collection 1963-1970 CDs (2000)
Lee Oskar CD music
$10.75 Digitally remastered by John McCortney (2000, AirWave Studios, Chicago, Illinois).
This collection of Guillermo Gregorio's early tapes is a tough one to pin down, since it features a wide variety of strange sounds: Gregorio plays the inside of a piano, breathes nervously through an alto sax, experiments with tape cutups, and leads improvising ensembles that include plastic horn, one-stringed violin, and electric accordion. The recordings, mostly put to tape live and at home, are absolutely horrible; these pieces sound like demos, which will annoy some listeners. But there's a sense of discovery here that's fascinating if the listener appreciates the music's context: Gregorio recorded Otra Musica from 1963 to 1970 in Argentina, isolated from the composers (including Iannis Xenakis and Musica Elettronica Viva) and improvisers (such as the Art Ensemble of Chicago) who were his peers. Quite often, his music was ahead of its time -- the seasick flute, violin, and cello heaves on "Sueño de Lilas y Margaritas en un Prado de Verano" don't particularly sound like anything that came before them, and "Solo" featured Gregorio alone on alto saxophone four years before Anthony Braxton popularized the solo sax medium. Despite its murky fidelity, Otra Musica is well worth hearing. ~ Charlie Wilmoth
