| 5 STARS FOR A MONKEE ALBUM? YOU BET! This album is incredible. It's as if The Monkees were given a brief moment in time to actually lead the pack. By jmcmullan (Kennett, MO, USA) |
| THE PRE - FAB FOUR SHINE After the Monkees had a crack at writing and playing (most) of the instruments themselves on the well received Headquarters it was business as usual for this smartly titled follow up. The results were, suprisingly, excellent and this is without doubt the finest and most consistent Monkees record ever produced. By hippymusicman (boston, uk) This review is for a different format. |

Two years on from the conceptual innovations of THICK AS A BRICK, Tull had learned how to crystallize the creativity of that prog-rock masterpiece and incorporate it into more traditional song structures. Thus, the songs here are full of daunting time signatures and dazzling feats of instrumental derring-do, but all in the context of shorter, more concise composition. There's also a darker edge to things here, as introduced by the tumultuous title cut.
The band's fascination with medieval-sounding themes was also beginning to blossom here, blending with their folk and prog influences. In this sense, WARCHILD can be seen as the template for much of what followed in the Tull catalog. The two best-known songs here represent extremes of the band's sound. "Bungle in the Jungle" is a bit of humorous riffery heavy on the hooks. "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day" is a poignant, folk-tinged ballad that harks back to THICK AS A BRICK's acoustic passages and ranks among Anderson's finest tunes.
24-bit digitally remastered reissue of 1974 album with 7 added bonus tracks 'Warchild Waltz', 'Quartet', 'Paradise Steakhouse', 'Sealion 2', 'Rainbow Blues', 'Glory Row' & 'Saturation'. Capitol. 2002.

David Crosby If I Could Only Remember My Name CD (1971)
Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. songs For his highly anticipated 1971 solo debut, David Crosby recorded a unique, eclectic, and willfully expansive album. The cream of early-70s California rock is assembled here, with the various celebrities joining together in an organic, collective approach that's embodied in the opener, the free-spirited jam of "Music Is Love." Throughout the record, Crosby moves from the sauntering Western shuffle of "Cowboy Movie" to the wondrously spiritual harmonies of "Tamalpais High (At About 3)" and, eventually, the hallowed chants of "I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here."
Musically the album has an exploratory, almost jazzy feel, with its bright production cloaking the listener in acoustic strains and lush, layered harmonies. These qualities perfectly evoke the relaxed, hazy California lifestyle of the time. For all its dreaminess though, IF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER MY NAME rarely missteps, and the haunting melancholy of songs like "Laughing" and "Orleans" give the record a depth and durability that surpasses other recordings of the time. The result is an excellent, highly underrated album.

Headquarters Vinyl LP (1967)
Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. CD music Douglas' "Forget That Girl" features one of Micky Dolenz's best vocals, and Dolenz's own "Randy Scouse Git" is an impressionistic, trippy delight. Perhaps the album's best track is the Davy Jones lead "Early Morning Blues and Greens," a moody slice of atmospheric pop. Even oddities like "Band 6" and "Zilch" are interesting ephemera. This reissue features six interesting alternate takes and demos.
One of the Monkees' two best albums, HEADQUARTERS is also the one '60s album on which the band played nearly all the instruments, save for a string section and occasional bass from producer Chip Douglas. Since Michael Nesmith had instigated the revolt that led to the band's musical independence, he's in the forefront here, and his songs are uniformly excellent. The banjo-driven "You Told Me" and "Sunny Girlfriend" are two of his best country-influenced tunes, and "You Just May Be the One" is magnificent REVOLVER-influenced psychedelic pop.
The Monkees: Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork.

Monkees Vinyl LP (1966)
Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. buy CD music Created to perform roles in a television series, the Monkees were greeted with scepticism by certain sections of the rock fraternity. The quartet may not have played the instruments on their debut album, but this does not diminish the appeal of its content. Excellent songs by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart formed its core, while contributions by Carole King, David Gates and group member Mike Nesmith ensure that the quality remains consistently high. Mickey Dolenz possesses the ideal pop voice and the enthusiasm generated on each performance is completely captivating. The Monkees' grasp of teen angst and melodrama is sure and, now divorced from contemporary travails, this album stands as one of the era's most entertaining debuts.
Additional personnel includes: Tommy Boyce (vocals, guitar); Bobby Hart (vocals, autoharp, organ, glockenspiel); Wayne Erwin, Gerry McGee, Louie Shelton, Al Casey, James Helms, Don Peake, Michael Deasy (guitar); Jimmy Bryant (fiddle); Bonnie Douglas, Paul Shure (violin); Myra Kestenbaum (viola); Fred Seykora, Joseph Ditullio (cello); Bob Cooper (oboe); Keith Allison (harmonica); Jack Keller (piano); Larry Knechtel (organ); Michael Rubini (harpsichord); Larry Taylor, William Pitman, Bob West (bass); Billy Lewis, Frank DeVito, Jim Gordon (drums).

Clearly they were not America's answer to the Beatles, even though at the time moptop fans seethed and decided to boycott them. They were the best manufactured pop group ever, and in Michael Nesmith had a musical semi-genius. Their second album, apart from the wretched "Your Auntie Grizelda," carries on from their debut. It contains the mantric "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone," Neil Diamond's chunka-chunka-chunk "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)," the funky "Mary Mary" and the paragon, "I'm A Believer," also written by Neil Diamond. Euphoric and nostalgic and completely marijuana-free.
