| | Bloodstone Natural High CD Bloodstone Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This reissue of NATURAL HIGH contains several tracks that did not
appear on the original release: "Girl (You Look So Fine)," "Judy, Judy," "Sadie Mae," "Take These Chains," "You Don't Mean Nothin'" and "Little Green Apples."
Principally recorded at The Village Recorder, West Los Angeles, California and Command Studios, London, England in 1972. Originally released on London (620). Includes liner notes by Wayne Edwards.
If you went by the name alone, you'd expect a group of gothic heavy-metallers, but in fact Bloodstone is one of the most underrated R&B groups of the '70s. Though best known for the mellow hit that gives this album its name, the band used R&B/soul music as a foundation for a fresh new style that owed as much to the Beatles as to Smokey Robinson. NATURAL HIGH was Bloodstone's commercial and artistic peak (it reached number 30 on the pop-albums chart). Throughout the album, psychedelic/experimental touches like backwards tapes and heavily-processed lead guitar mingle with soulful ballads and hard-edged funk.
The title track, a top-10 hit, is a beautiful ballad featuring classic falsetto soul vocals and jazzy guitar playing. Bloodstone pays homage to one of its rock and roll influences on a funked-up medley of "Bo Diddley" and "Diddley Daddy." The band can even take a pop song like "Little Green Apples" (one of several bonus tracks on this reissue) and personalize it in its inimitably soulful fashion.

| | If You're Ready: The Best Of Enchantment CD (1996)
Natural High CD music
$8.85 Enchantment were one of the very last "sweet soul" groups of the '70s to reach fruition and chart success. Not slick enough to be dubbed "urban contemporary," they offered a polished take on the early '70s soul of Motown (especially the Temptations and Marvin Gaye) and Philly (the O'Jays, particularly on the more uptempo numbers). Indeed, by the time of their first hits in ...

| | Robert Miles Organik Remixes CDs (2003)
Natural High album
$13.29 Since the release of Organik, Robert Miles seemed to hang up the wide-angle trance of his hit "Children" and focus on releasing music that's more challenging and esoteric. It's a great move since Miles has a knack for atmosphere, and the remixers on Organik Remixes notice it. Tracks come and go with few melodies to latch onto, but it doesn't seem to matter when a whole slew of well-constructed and innovative sounds fall out the speakers. Organik gets quite a work over with only traces of exotic instruments left over and ends up more paranoid and jarring than the original. Si Begg, 2nd Gen, and the Fabrics make Miles sound especially freaky and deviceful, while Riton paint him as the older brother of Red Snapper. The Future Sound of London mix is a letdown, but the two remixers that were chosen from an Internet contest (Kuzu and Fissure) hold their own against the superstars. Two CDs long, disc two is far better, and the whole thing could have fit on one had the enhanced video been left off. Minor quibble for a collection this good. ~ David Jeffries
