After The Velvet Underground cut three albums for the jazz-oriented Verve label that earned them lots of notoriety but negligible sales, the group signed with industry powerhouse Atlantic Records in 1970; label head Ahmet Ertegun supposedly asked Lou Reed to avoid sex and drugs in his songs, and instead focus on making an album "loaded with hits." Loaded was the result, and with appropriate irony it turned out to be the first VU album that made any noticeable impact on commercial radio -- and also their swan song, with Reed leaving the group shortly before its release. With John Cale long gone from the band, Doug Yule highly prominent (he sings lead on four of the ten tracks), and Maureen Tucker absent on maternity leave, this is hardly a purist's Velvet Underground album. But while Lou Reed always wrote great rock & roll songs with killer hooks, on Loaded his tunes were at last given a polished but intelligent production that made them sound like the hits they should have been, and there's no arguing that "Sweet Jane" and "Rock and Roll" are as joyously anthemic as anything he's ever recorded. And if this release generally maintains a tight focus on the sunny side of the VU's personality (or would that be Reed's personality?), "New Age" and "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" prove he had hardly abandoned his contemplative side, and "Train Around the Bend" is a subtle but revealing metaphor for his weariness with the music business. Sterling Morrison once said of Loaded, "It showed that we could have, all along, made truly commercial sounding records," but just as importantly, it proved they could do so without entirely abandoning their musical personality in the process. It's a pity that notion hadn't occurred to anyone a few years earlier. ~ Mark Deming This does include the original Loaded album, with full-length versions of "Sweet Jane," "Rock & Roll," and "New Age" replacing the earlier edited ones. But that's less than half of the package; the rest of the two-disc, 33-track set is comprised of alternate mixes, alternate taRolling Stone (12/11/03, p.120) - Ranked #109 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "[A] record that highlights the R&B/doo-wop roots and Sun Records crackle deep inside the Velvets' noir-guitar maelstrom..." Velvet Underground Loaded Songs Loaded Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Loaded Loaded Fully I much "Sweet Jane" an "Rock & Roll" the rarest, irregular and more atypical album. Submitted by horazzy (Distrito Federal, MX, MEXICO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
get this album if you dont have it already One of the finest Rock Albums ever. Although a strange and unique sound defined the Velvet's career leading up to this point, nothing could prepare the world for LOADED in all its glory. A must for any fan of true rock and roll. This one is fabulous Loaded is fabulous from start to finish. First of all, it has "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll" - two of the best riff songs ever. Second, it has two up tempo numbers that really swing in "New Age" and "Head Held High." Third, it has mellow rockers like "Cowboy Bill" and "Train Round the Bend." Then, there are 23 extra songs and alternate versions. Three of the songs would appear later on Lou Reed's first three solo albums - "The Ocean", "Satellite of Love," and "Sad Song." Some of the demo and outtake versions don't add much, but overall its an excellent disc. If you like any of the Velvets or Lou Reed, you need to have this one. Photographers: Susan Cooper; Billy Name. The world of pop music was hardly ready for The Velvet Underground's first album when it appeared in the spring of 1967, but while The Velvet Underground and Nico sounded like an open challenge to conventional notions of what rock music could sound like (or what it could discuss), 1968's White Light/White Heat was a no-holds-barred frontal assault on cultural and aesthetic propriety. Recorded without the input of either Nico or Andy Warhol, White Light/White Heat was the purest and rawest document of the key Velvets lineup of Lou Reed, ...

$9.49 This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family. The 1997 reissue also adds a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos, the original LP liner notes and song lyrics. | | Gypsy Romany Collection CD (2004)
Loaded
$15.29 Gypsy were one of the great attractions at the Isle Of Wight 1969 Festival. A couple of years later, they released their debut eponymous album which drew favourable comparisons with Buffalo Springfield and Moby Grape. "The Romany Collection" brings together the long awaited reissue of Gypsy's first album, plus both sides of their debut single and six previously unreleased studio tracks. This album was compiled with the full co-operation of the band, who provided photographs for the 8 page booklet and assisted with the extensive liner notes.
Gypsy (UK): John Knapp (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Robin Pizer, Rod Read (vocals, guitar); David McCarthy (vocals, bass guitar); Moth Smith (drums). Though titled The Romany Collection, this is actually pretty much an extended CD reissue of Gypsy's 1971 debut album (titled American Gypsy in the U.K., and English Gypsy in the U.S.) with eight bonus tracks and historical liner notes. The Gypsy album, which is the core of this reissue, was the work of a British band extremely influenced by late-'60s Californian folk/psychedelic rock -- more so than almost any other U.K. group you could name, in fact. Why is it, then, that hardly anyone can name Gypsy these days? In short, it's because the album's extremely derivative of Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and especially Moby Grape, particularly in the vocal harmonies. And it's because, while those are good influences to work from, the songs aren't nearly as good as the best work by the aforementioned acts. Some specialists would cavil that it's unfair to hold secondary bands like Gypsy up to such high standards, and that the music should be judged on its own terms. But let's be straight about it: on this particular platter, the similarities are inescapable. The lead vocals often have the gritty tremble characteristic of numerous Moby Grape tracks; the harmonies on "I Don't Care Do You Mind?" are very much in the early CSN&Y style; the guitar soloing on "Turning Wheel" can't fail to recall Neil Young's "Down by the River"; some of the lyrics on "Standing Alone, Feeling So Bad" sound rather like Buffalo Springfield's "Mr. Soul"; and "Pony Ride" is a son (or should that be "grandson"?) of Moby Grape's "Hey Grandma." It's well played and ...
