Playtime Favorites is a collection of 22 children's standards performed by child vocalists; while some may already have versions of "Skip to My Lou," "Wheels on the Bus," "Bingo," "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" and others, this is nonetheless a fine, enjoyable choice for kids who don't, as well as a handy way to have all these songs in one place. ~ Steve Huey

| | They Might Be Giants Here Come The Abcs CD (2005) With DVD
Children's Favorites
$15.19 As the title intimates, HERE COME THE ABCS is about the alphabet. The album-length conceit spins the 26 letters through the Johns' wacky imagination, anthropomorphizing them ("E Eats Everything"), using them to illustrate geography ("Alphabet of Nations"), and even pitting them against each other ("D & W"). As usual with the Giants, there are games galore ("Can You Find It?"), interesting philosophical questions ("Who Put the Alphabet in Alphabetical Order?"), and a kaleidoscope of musical styles, including Beatlesque psych-pop ("Pictures of Pandas Painting"), twangy country ("Fake-Believe"), and funky indie-rock (the aforementioned "E Eats Everything"). HERE COME THE ABCS is ingenious, weird, silly, and great fun for playful kids and adults.
The band is partnered with Disney in this set. Included are all the contagious songs heard on Radio Disney and the music videoes seen on Playhouse Disney. The set is sure to make the alphabet fun and entertaining for children and parents. The DVD features animation, puppetry, and live action footage, plus the music video to the the theme song for the hit preschool series, Higglytown Heroes.
Critics may laud They Might Be Giants' knack for ingenious pop hooks and nimble, brainy wordplay (and those things are certainly true), but another aspect of their appeal is that their music is so fun and goofy it can make the listener feel like a kid. It is no surprise then that Giants John Flansburgh and John Linnell are naturals at making recordings for children (see their excellent release NO!). HERE COME THE ABCS, released on Disney's label, bears all the giddy hallmarks of TMBG's best work.
They Might Be Giants: John Flansburgh (vocals, various instruments); John Linnell.
| | Los Lobos Goes Disney CD (2009)
Children's Favorites
$15.29 For their second children's album (following 2005's PAPA'S DREAM, made with Lalo Guerrero), Los Lobos pay tribute to the Walt Disney movie musicals, as others have done before them. This version of the Disney songbook falls in between Barbara Cook's traditional pop treatment on THE DISNEY ALBUM and producer Hal Willner's more imaginative, revisionist take of some of the material, STAY AWAKE. (Los Lobos appeared on the latter, performing "I Wan'na Be Like You," a song repeated here.) Put simply, LOS LOBOS GOES DISNEY could have been called "Disney goes Los Lobos" instead, since the group applies its familiar mixture of musical styles to Disney songs. At first, that seems more radical than it turns out to be over the course of the disc, as the band launches into a spirited version of "Heigh-Ho" sung in Spanish. English rules thereafter, as Los Lobos alternately play the songs in rock & roll ("The Ugly Bug Ball") and Mexican ("Bella Notte" in a norteńo reading) styles, as is their wont. "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" gets a surprisingly relaxed arrangement, with a loping tempo, while "The Bare Necessities" is taken at a quick 2-step beat with a Cajun/zydeco flavor. Randy Newman's wistful "I Will Go Sailing No More" from TOY STORY is as wistful as usual, however, and "Oo-De-Lally" from ROBIN HOOD retains its identity as a typical country-folk number from the old "king of the road," Roger Miller. It all ends up with an instrumental medley of "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "It's a Small World" that sounds like it belongs on a tape of early Beatles recordings; it even comes complete with the crescendo from "Twist & Shout." Clearly, Los Lobos were having fun on this record, as they should have been. The interpretations are hardly definitive, but they are enjoyable and demonstrate the range and adaptability of the music written for Disney movies over the years.
Personnel: Cesar Rosas (vocals, guitar, bajo sexto); Louie Pérez (vocals, guitar, jarana); David Hidalgo (vocals, guitar, ac
| | They Might Be Giants Here Comes Science CDs (2009) With DVD
Children's Favorites
$15.59 Routinely described as "quirky," and "zany," They Might Be Giants have always seemed like self-consciously intellectual adults trying their darndest to hold on to childhood. It makes sense then, that John Flansburgh and John Linnell would eventually start making music expressly for children. HERE COMES SCIENCE is the group's fourth effort to this end, following albums about numbers, letters, and all other manner of kid-centric topics. Here, TMBG point their microscope towards the physical world and its phenomena. In addition to more predictable topics like dinosaurs ("I Am a Palentologist") and the Periodic Table ("Meet the Elements"), the duo actually addresses more complex, but no less essential, concepts such as the fluidity of scientific fact; "Why Does the Sun Shine?" maintains that the sun is made of gas, while the following song, "Why Does the Sun Really Shine?" corrects that earlier assumption, revealing that the celestial body is, as more recent theories dictate, composed of plasma. Throughout, They Might Be Giants are unafraid of using advanced vocabulary and introducing thoroughly adult ideas, trusting that, with the help of the group's trademark talent for stick-in-the-head melodies and vibrant pop arrangements, younger listeners are more than up to the intellectual task.

| | Wishbone Ash Bare Bones CD (2000)
Children's Favorites
$14.75 Folk music always played a part in Wishbone Ash's unique style, along with blues, rock & roll, and Yes-style prog-rock riffs, but long time fans might be a little surprised by this set. It's Wishbone Ash unplugged, with nary an electric guitar on hand until the closing "Everybody Needs a Friend," to which founding member Andy Powell contributes some dazzling solos. The songs mostly have a strong Celtic flavor, with the exception of an occasional blues-based tune like "Love Abuse," which features fetching background vocals by undervalued British singer-songwriter Claire Hamill. Some of the songs here, such as "Wings of Desire" and "Errors of My Way," date back to the band's original early-1970s incarnation.
Wishbone Ash: Andy Powell (vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin); Mark Birch (vocals, acoustic guitar); Morwena Lasko, Lewis Gibson (violin); Giles Hedley (harmonica); Mick Parker (accordion); Paul Moran (piano, Hammond organ); Bob Skeat (bass, background vocals); Ray Weston (drums); Glen LeFleur, Ansley Powell (percussion); Claire Hamill (background vocals).

| | Kenny Smith Girls With Tattoos CD (2007)
Children's Favorites
$9.59 Sometime back in 1979, Linda Lou Kestin gave to Kenny Smith an envelope that contained over twenty-five lyrics she had written over the years and that she was also going to submit them to several songwriter’s contests. Linda Lou Kestin’s first record was with the legendary LEE ROGERS, when he recorded “Love And Life” and Linda co-produced the single for CKS Productions. CKS found distribution with Claridge Records, and released it’s only single entitled “Train Of Desire” with Total Force and Demene E. Hall, then Paul McCartney’s MPL Communications took over the company and dropped the little label. Rogers “It Must Be Love” in 1980 followed with Kestin as the songwriter. In 1986, Smith got the chance to record and produce another one of Linda’s first lyrics entitled “You Make My Life So Beautiful” performed by the group “Better Half.” The vocals were to light for the artist, and the track appeared on this group’s album with the same name. Kestin forged ahead with her writing career, as she was also busy as a single mother raising two beautiful then teenage daughters in Santa Ana. And was the vice-principal of one of the lead magnet schools, and a teacher. Her Hobby of singing and writing song lyrics was a great stress releaser from the job. The year 1987, when Kenny Smith released his first of four albums entitled “Raw And Nasty”, definitely influenced by his moved to Las Vegas. Three Songs from that album included “Love Thang” and “Sweet Gypsy Woman” and “Heartbreaker” with lyrical support from Kestin’s work.
