(1 Customer Review)
The title may be ARETHA'S BLUES, but this compilation goes far beyond such a simple designation. This selection of early Atlantic material finds Franklin mixing gospel with the deep soul of her Muscle Shoals back-up crew on tracks like "Today I Sing The Blues." On "Pitiful," she swings with a big band horn arrangement that wouldn't sound out of place on a Ray Charles record.
Franklin's passionate singing style easily allows her passage to the deep pathos of the blues. Both Percy Mayfield ("River's Invitation") and B.B. King ("The Thrill Is Gone [From Yesterday's Kiss]") are given their due. She tackles country material such as Willie Nelson's "Night Life" and makes it her own. Even the covers of "You Are My Sunshine" and "Night Time Is The Right Time" easily stand toe-to-toe with Brother Ray's better-known versions. Franklin's gospel roots are never far away as feisty back-up singers and stride piano (often played by Lady Soul herself) make songs such as "Dr. Feelgood (Love Is A Serious Business)" a sanctified affair.
Subtitled - Aretha's Blues. She may be the essential Soul Diva, but Aretha's peerless vocal mastery slays the delta blues as well, as this intense compilation of her finest Atlantic blues sides proves on wrenching renditions of 'Today I Sing The Blues', 'Dr. Feelgood', 'Nightlife' and many more. 16 tracks to make you hurt so good. STEAMIN' is one of the classic albums by Miles Davis's first great quintet, along with WORKIN', RELAXIN', and COOKIN'. With John Coltrane beside him in the front line, and the smooth-as-cream rhythm section of Philly Joe Jones (drummer), Paul Chambers (drums), and Red Garland (piano), Miles creates, on STEAMIN', a definitive slice of sophisticated post bop. Whether treating standards ("When I Fall in Love;" "Surrey With the Fringe On Top") or Thelonious Monk ("Well, You Needn't"), Miles and company never misstep, turning in a record for the ages that will not go stale, no matter how many times it's played. The 2007 reissue features beautifully remastered sound.
The final in a series of legendary recordings with the classic Miles Davis Quintet, STEAMIN' is distinguished by the virtuosity of drummer Joseph Rudolph Jones. Philly Joe's soulful, stylish command of the drum set's technical demands (his remarkable coordination, touch and speed of hand) and his wily command of time demonstrate why he is venerated as an innovator.
Philly Joe played right on top of the beat, sometimes spilling over ahead of it. He took more chances, and pulled off more daring polyrhythmic designs than any drummer of his generation save for Max Roach and Art Blakey. Nowhere is this better illustrated than on an abstract romp through Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts." Jones sets a fierce boppish pace with fragmented shards of Afro-Cuban accents, Vaudevillian rim shots and elegant counterpoint. An unbridled ...
