I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (An Anthology) covers the bulk of Warren Zevon's career, conveniently skipping over his long-forgotten first album and concentrating heavily on his Asylum records, as well as his albums for Virgin and Giant. Over the course of the double-disc set's 44 songs, nearly every one of Zevon's greatest songs is featured, including six songs each from Warren Zevon and Excitable Boy, as well as a number of songs only featured on soundtrack albums, a handful of outtakes, and Hindu Love Gods' cover of Prince's "Raspberry Beret." The quality of Zevon's music declines somewhat as his career progresses, but the compilation captures most of the highlights from his latter-day records. For casual fans who want to dig deeper than Warren ZeEntertainment Weekly (9/20/96, pp.80-81) - "...Zevon's later oeuvre, like his hair, may not be perfect, but even in unevenness, there's a special place in gonzo rock history due this mercy-craving mercenary." - Rating: B+ Q (12/96, p.147) - 5 Stars (out of 5) - "...an object lesson in how to do justice to a 20-year career....an invaluable opportunity to ponder how it's possible to be this good and this obscure." Uncut (9/03, p.96) - "...[This] does a splendid job of rounding up Zevon's best songs..." I'll Sleep When I'm Dead Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) orinal desperado warren is one of my all time favorites basd on his 70's work. i wasn't too familiar with alot that came after that,so i picked this up to use as a sampler for future purchases. now i find,i will have to go back and buy everything he did after "bad luck streak in dancing school". Raw Zevon I like the rawness of the recordings...it makes me feel like I am at a small venue listening to him belt out his old favourites.
Highly recommended, particularly if you already have the Excitable Boy album. Submitted by wondalli (Qld, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Rare musical talent.... This 2 CD compilation of Warren Zevon take you or a wonderful musical journey, a journey that you'd wish never ends. I strongly recommend this dual CD collection especially, if you enjoy some other greats such as Gordon Lightfoot, Dave Alvin and Townes Van Zandt. Buy it even if you don't! Original, creative, and outstanding A true original, Warren Zevon's music was both rocking and melodic, and his lyrics could be tender or vicious, sometimes both during the same song. This is an excellent review of the first 20 years of his career, with several unreleased songs, and there's not a bad track in the bunch. If you've ever heard anything by this amazing artist, and are curious to try more, by all means get this set. Submitted by a reviewer (Edgewood, MD USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
