The idea behind '70s Party Killers is that this collection contains 12 of the "worst" singles of all-time -- kitschy, schlocky soft-rock hits from the '70s that are guaranteed to kill a party. It's also a clever way for Rhino to recycle all the songs that they've already licensed for Have A Nice Day! Super Hits of the '70s -- all but two of these songs, (Paul Anka's "(You're) Having My Baby" and Clint Holmes' "Playground in My Mind") are on that multi-volume series. For some, it will be nice to have all these kitsch classics on one CD, but it's a little frustrating to see Rhino recycle "The Night Chicago Died," "Billy, Don't Be a Hero," "Feelings," "Sometimes When We Touch," "Afternoon Delight," "Torn Between Two Lovers," "The Candy Man," "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" and "Muskrat Love" once again. And if you're thinking of using this disc as a party killer, keep in mind that for a certain generation -- one that's younger than you may think -- this is party music. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

For various legal reasons, no Ambrosia recordings were released on compact disc in America until 1997's Anthology, and while it's an imperfect collection, it does offer a reasonably thorough overview of the group's career. It only briefly touches on their early art rock records, choosing to concentrate instead on their early-'80s soft rock hits like "Biggest Part of Me," "You're the Only Woman," and "How Much I Feel." As a result, dedicated prog rock fans will find this collection inadequate, but for most casual listeners, it will contain everything they need and then some, since the disc is padded with three new songs that are pleasant. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
