Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Jon Lord (piano, organ); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Recorded live in Osaka, Japan and Tokyo, Japan on August 16 & 17, 1972. For many fans of Deep Purple, the band was at the peak of its power circa the Machine Head era -- especially on the concert stage. With one live recording from this era already in the shops -- 1973's classic Made in Japan (often considered one of the best-ever live hard rock albums) -- this live "Purple peak" has already been documented long ago. But to commemorate the 25th anniversary of when the group was truly firing on all cylinders, another live set was issued -- 2007's Live in Denmark 1972. Most of Purple's classics are included ("Highway Star," "Black Night," etc.), except for one glaring exception -- "Smoke on the Water" (which at the time of this recording was just beginning to catch fire as one of rock's all-time great anthems and instantly recognizable riffs). However, along with Led Zeppelin, Purple were one of the leading arena bands of the time that featured overindulgent jamming that bordered on mind-numbing, and the proof here is the inclusion of several songs that stretch over the ten-minute mark -- the most glaring perpetrator being a near 25-minute (!) reading of "Space Truckin'." As a result, quite a lot of the original compositions' succinct power gets lost beneath all the blubber. ~ Greg Prato This March 1, 1972 show was filmed by Danmarks Radio, Denmark's national television and radio station. It was eventually released on video, which in turn led to some CD bootlegs of the audio portion of the concert. This double CD is not only legitimate but is an improvement on those bootlegs, as the sound was taken directly from the original video audio reel, and the discs are packaged with eight pages of detailed liner notes. It could be taken as the bridge between Machine Head and Live in Japan, as Machine Head had been recorded just a few months earlier at the end of 1971, but Made in Japan would not be recorded until five months after this Danish gig. Deep Purple fans won't find this on par with either Machine Head or Live in Japan, but those whose purple streak runs deep will probably like this set, as the sound quality's pretty good and not far below official release standard. Just three songs from Machine Head ("Highway Star," "Black Night," and "Space Truckin'") make it in, though, most of the other five tracks coming off Fireball, with a cover of Little Richard's "Lucille" thrown in. That's right, that means that there's no "Smoke in the Water," which had yet to assert itself as a hit single. In the tradition of live albums by loud bands, the performances tend toward the overextended side, particularly "Space Truckin'," which balloons to a 22-minute length courtesy of much noodling jamming. ~ Richie Unterberger Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple's Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to headliner status in the U.S. and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music. Since reorganizing with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover in 1969, Deep Purple had recorded three important albums -- Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head -- and used the material to buildRolling Stone (5/24/73, p.58) - "..Purple's definitive metal monster, a spark-filled execution of the typical Purple style...volatile stage personalities...technically superior.." Brings back the memories A must have CD for any DP fans or true rock & rollers! Takes me back to their reunion tour many years back (Tacoma, WA.), which I was lucky enough to "experience" (you don't just "listen" to Deep Purple live). It will be a long time (if ever) before a performance of this caliber will happen again! Submitted by tweister (Anchorage, Alaska, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Would have been a 5 star but I agree with others here that this album is one of the finest live rock albums of all time by the band that really invented "heavy metal". Made before the fake live albums many artists chose to release during the 70's such as Kiss, Frampton and others that used lots of studio sweetening afterwards. Sometimes on these fake live albums all that was "live" was the crowd sounds. Like I said before, a great album, although the remastering engineer for this release forgot something. Ian Pace is a left handed drummer. The stereo image is set up as if a right handed drummer would be playing. So as a result of this Richie Blackmore and John Lord are on the wrong sides of the image. The Deep Purple set up live was Richie Blackmore(guitar) always on the right side and John Lord(B3 organ) was on the left. This imaging has the band set up backwards. The sound quality is awesome, performances were awesome! Submitted by David (Santa Barbara, CA.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
All Time Classic- in Everyone's Top3/5 If you're into Heavy Metal/Hard Rock, this is a must for your collection as well as your education!
It has everything. The most stunning thing is the 5 world class/all time great individuals (all still playing & performing) who play better when they play together and better still when they play live!!
This has energy, style, rhythm and instinctive timing. 35 years later is still fresh & UNDUBBED. All other live albums in this class have to equate to this. The digitisation adds to the sound quality & the bonus tracks really rock. This is strictly 'no brainer' territory. Submitted by AliB (Dublin, Irl) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A REVOLUTIONARY ALBUM FOR ITS TIME I'M OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER HOW WE WORE OUT THE VINYL LISTENING TO THE POWERHOUSE CUTS ON "MACHINE HEAD". BUT THEN CAME "MADE IN JAPAN," AND WE STOPPED LISTENING TO THE STUDIO VERSIONS OF THESE SONGS BECAUSE OF THE RAW ENERGY AND QUALITY RECORDINGS OF THE LIVE PERFORMANCES. THIS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST LIVE ALBUMS THAT SOUNDED BETTER THAN STUDIO PRODUCTIONS. I'M GLAD TO SEE THAT OVER 30 YEARS LATER, THIS ALBUM STILL COMMANDS RESPECT. Submitted by ARTR420 (PARK RIDGE, IL.
