The Beau Brummels, a San Francisco combo led by singer/guitarists Ron Elliott and Sal Valentino, were a somewhat calculated attempt to create a U.S. version of a British Invasion band, from their ever so English name to the cunning way that "Beau Brummels" would come right after "Beatles" in a record store's racks. To their credit, the ways in which the band didn't get the British Invasion feel quite right were their saving grace. By adding a slightly more garagey sound, thanks to Sylvester Stewart's rough-edged production, and a strong folk influence in Elliott and Valentino's jangly 12-string guitars, the band created the blueprint for west coast rock in the Nuggets era. The singles "Laugh Laugh" and "Just A Little" were tremendous influences not only on the Byrds but seemingly dozens of other California bands which themselves later inspired hundreds of other jangle-pop groups around the world.

Before settling for enduring cult fame with Big Star, Alex Chilton enjoyed ephemeral pop stardom as a singer with Memphis group the Box Tops. Their first hit, "The Letter," was a tantalizingly short and perfect pop song-from its drum-tapped intro to its sound effects-drenched fadeout. In an effort to sustain momentum after this 1967 chart topper, the rest of the band was kept out of the studio while the American Sound studio mafia backed the gravel-voiced teenage Chilton under the supervision of producer Dan Penn.
The group had a total of ten Top 100 hits, all included here. The finest of these, "Cry Like a Baby," is an impeccable slice of blue-eyed soul penned by Penn and Spooner Oldham. ...

Too bad guitarist Junior Watson isn't as prolific as he is talented. This is only his second solo album and it comes eight years after his first. Regardless, it's nearly an hour's worth of crackling jump blues, played and sung by a guy with chops to spare and a light enough vocal touch to make these 11 covers and three originals connect like the finest music from the '40s and '50s jazz/blues hipsters that have obviously influenced his style. Watson's own contemporaries, such as Rick Holmstrom, Jimmie Vaughan, and Kim Wilson, sing his praises for a good reason; his taste and tone recall the heavyweights of the jump genre without slavishly copying them. The guitarist chose to record this session entirely live in the studio. That's with no overdubs, even for the vocals. The environment allows him to connect to the material with a crisp immediacy, especially on an instrumental take of Pee Wee Crayton's "Blues After Hours." Saxist Baron Shul honks on his baritone and tenor horns like a man born half a century too late, and contributions from boogie-woogie piano master Gene Taylor on all but four tracks bring additional authenticity to the session. The set is peppered with obscure tunes from even more obscure artists such as Felix & His Hot Peppers, Woo Woo Moore, and Peppermint Harris, But Watson breathes new life into these dusty gems with a raw, rollicking approach that never feels studied or cramped.
