Maybe it's because "60's Rock Party" is such a vague concept, but Millennium 60's Rock Party is the least cohesive installment in Rhino's century series, Millennium 60's Rock Party. A "60's Rock Party" follows no particular genre or style, apparently, since the disc flip-flops between British Invasion, soul, psychedelia, garage rock, pop and good old rock & roll from any year of the decade at the drop of a hat. That's not to say that it's bad, however. Not a song among these 20 is anything less than a classic, at least as far as oldies radio is concerned. The only flaw is that it's entirely too predictable -- after all, "You Really Got Me," "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," "Mony Mony," "Oh, Pretty Woman," "The Loco-Motion," "Wooly Bully," "Gimme Some Lovin'," "The Letter," "Wild Thing," "Happy Together," "Incense and Peppermints," "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)," "If You Wanna Be Happy," "I Only Want to Be with You" and "These Boots Are Made for Walking" have hardly left the airwaves since their initial release. Ultimately, complaining that the album is a little scattershot or predictable are the gripes of a record collector, who will already have these songs somewhere else. The casual listener, however, will find that this is a good, solid collection of '60s favorites that's quite entertaining, even if it does sound a lot like oldies radio. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Sure, this compilation has its share of stuff already in any respectable CD collection (I've got greatest hits collections by the Kinks, the Young Rascals, Tommy James and the Shondells, Dusty Springfield). But this collection also has GREAT singles by one-hit wonders like the Human Beinz (Nobody but Me), Jimmy Soul (If You Wanna Be Happy), and the McCoys (Hang on Sloopy). What's not to like? Best 60's CD out there! I've purchased several CD's from the 1960's, but this one has them all beat, as far as great hits. I rock out from one song to the next. The other CD's I purchased may have 5 or 6 good songs then the rest are just so-so. Great buy, Don't hesitate!!!!! Submitted by Donna S. (Las Vegas NV) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$12.79 Exploding into the stale vacuum of music in 1976 were four lads from the working-class burg known as Queens, New York: The Ramones! Projecting non-image as image, the Ramones invented worlds with every new song, populating their fantasies with characters like Sheena The Punk Rocker and Suzy The Headbanger. They were successful simply because they knew how to write great rock & roll--all energy, swagger and bravado; no solos, no chops, and no classical ...

Through the course of 11 exquisitely challenging original compositions, the trio paint musically fluid movies of mood and texture that excite, even in their relative quiet...The brilliance of this wonderful recording is that it is at once musically riveting and supremely challenging, but never abrasive. I am fond of music that dares to be grating and abrasive at times, but this is a decided departure. I don't recall another recording over the past few years that has taken this almost brooding tact. It is tremendously exciting. It is an emotionally draining piece of music, as well as wholly exhilarating. " (M. Gallo, JazzReview.com)"An extremely thoughtful, focused and well matched trio who often remind me of Braxton/AACM style of cautious, spacious improv spirits. Except for Anthony Braxton and his collaborators, we rarely get to hear any contrabass, contra-alto or alto clarinets at length, so this is indeed a treat. Those dry wooden tones and quiet violin abstractions sound great to me. You can tell that these cats have been at it for a while as there is a carefully crafted thread that runs through it all and it sounds as if this is partially charted material. Well thought out, nice use of space and no screaming." (Downtown Music Gallery newsletter January 30, 2004 --NY)."Moody clarinet, explosive violin, and high-pitched saxophone sounds send ...
